One of the things Civitas values most is the opportunity to step behind the scenes of businesses that many people know and love, and to learn from the founders and teams building them.

Recently, Justin King, Principal Facilitator from Civitas Cape Town spent time with the team at Julep Flowers. Like many great businesses, what customers see on the outside is only a fraction of the story.

Behind every bouquet is a team of people who care deeply about the experience they create. Walking through the business, hearing the story behind the brand was a powerful reminder that businesses are ultimately built by humans, for humans.

In a world that often feels rushed and transactional, Julep has built something centred around thoughtfulness, connection and helping people celebrate life's moments — both big and small.

Thank you to Julia and Nic for sharing your journey so generously. There is something special about founders and teams who continue to lead with heart as they grow.

Referrals: Turn your Customers into your best Sales Channel.

In this practical session, Referral Factory Founder Kirsty Sharman shares how brands can turn existing customers into a powerful source of referrals, reviews, retention, loyalty, and advocacy. As acquisition costs rise and audiences become more skeptical of traditional marketing, Kirsty unpacks why customer-led growth matters more than ever and how businesses can build systems that encourage customers to actively promote their brand.

There’s something incredibly powerful about getting 25 female founders around one table.

Different industries. Different journeys. Different stages of business.
But one shared understanding of what it takes to build, lead, carry responsibility, and keep showing up.

Yesterday’s Female Founders Lunch reminded us how valuable spaces like this are - spaces where conversations move beyond surface level networking and into honest connection, shared lessons, support, and real relationships.

Communities are not built through content alone.
They are built through conversations, trust, vulnerability, and people willing to champion one another.

A huge thank you to Joelene Roelofse and the team at Epicure for hosting and sponsoring such a beautiful lunch experience. The setting, food, and hospitality created the perfect environment for meaningful connection.

This is exactly why communities like Civitas matter.
Because founders grow faster when they don’t grow alone.

Here’s to more conversations, more collaboration, and more women building remarkable businesses together.

What a Tuesday evening at the Civitas
CEO Fireside Chat.

Greg Walsh of G&G The Goosebumps Company has been behind some of South Africa’s most iconic event experiences, from Rage Festival to the Luxurious Marble Circus. Hearing the real story behind building something that big, the hard chapters included, was a good reminder that the journey is rarely as polished as the end result.

Grateful for events that bring people together to share what they have learned.

Some evenings linger with you long after they’ve ended. Our Civitas Cape Town May Fireside Chat with Sarah Dusek certainly did.

We gathered at werkhuis in Newlands to hear from serial entrepreneur, investor and co-founder of Under Canvas, the business that helped redefine luxury outdoor hospitality and scaled beyond a $100 million valuation.

There’s often this assumption that successful entrepreneurs need to be the loudest person in the room. Hard-driving. Unshakeable. Aggressive. Sarah challenged that completely. She spoke with such honesty and softness, and yet underneath that gentleness was an enormous amount of courage.

It was a reminder that there isn’t one personality type that succeeds in business. You don’t have to become someone else to build something extraordinary.

Thank you, Sarah, for such a thoughtful and deeply human conversation, and thank you to every founder in the room who continues to show up bravely in their own journey.

And thank you Rebecca Tara Cameron from SaleMate for sponsoring the pictures.
