👩‍🍳Betty's Tip: How to Know When Your Cake is Ready 🎂

Learn how to tell when your cake is done with Betty Crocker South Africa

The edges pull away
One of the tell-tale signs that your cake is ready or soon to be ready, is the edges. These are usually the first area to be cooked and will move inwards away from the cake tin as the mixture begins to tighten. Before you open the oven, have a peek through the glass and see if this has happened yet. There should be a slight gap between the tin as you notice the cake pull away.

However, for some cakes, you are not required to grease the tin. Meaning that you won't be able to judge how ready your cake is from the edges. This is true for sponge cakes, as support from the pan is required to help the cake rise.

1 Betty Crocker Super Moist Dark Chocolate Cake Mix
3 Eggs
80ml Oil
275ml Water

2. Beat the cake mix, oil, water, and eggs in a large bowl on low speed.
3. Beat for a further 2 minutes on medium speed.
4. Pour the batter into the well-greased springform cake pan.
5. Bake at 180C for 25 – 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

360ml Whipping Cream
5ml Vanilla Paste or Essence

👩‍🍳Betty's Tip: How to Colour Icing 🧁
Who said icing had to be boring? Follow these tips to bring icing colours to life!

1. Once you’ve made up your icing or buttercream frosting, you need to separate it into several bowls. For instance, if you intend to use three different colours, separate your icing into four different bowls. The extra bowl is just in case you add too much colouring and want to soften the colour, or would just like to add plain or white icing to your design.
2. Add your colouring. Icing colour is really concentrated, so the important thing to remember is that less is more. Only add a couple of drops to begin with, as you can always add more. If you prefer pastel-like shades, only add a drop or two, if you love bright vibrant colours, you can be a little more generous.
3. Use a knife of a toothpick to swirl the drops into your icing in order for the colouring to distribute evenly before mixing vigorously.
4. Review your work! If the colour is too pale for you, add a couple more drops, if it is too dark, add some of your spare icing to mute it.
That’s it! Now all you have to do is decide on which colour to try first!

👩‍🍳Betty's Tip: How to Mix Muffin Batter 👩‍🍳
Betty's Kitchen walks you through how to mix muffin batter to ensure your muffins are light and fluffy:
1. Folding your batter is a gentle method of mixing and very effective for muffins – simply use a spoon or spatula to cut down to the bottom of the mixture, move it across the bottom of the bowl, and come back up, folding some of the mixture from the bottom of the bowl to the top. This method will also allow more air into the batter, giving your marvellous muffins a great rise.
2. Don’t use an electric mixer, this can result in a really tough texture.
3. When adding additional yummy treats into your muffin mix, such as chocolate chips or nuts, make sure you stir them in gently.
4. Make sure all your ingredients are evenly distributed. Your batter should be well mixed, but don’t worry too much if there are a few lumps.
