It's Ask Sazi Tuesday! 🐾

This week's question is: Will the heatwave affect pest activity? 🪳☀️

With heatwave warnings stretching across Southern Africa and temperatures soaring into the mid-to-high 30s, extreme heat changes the game for pests around your home and business.

Are they heading indoors? Are they breeding faster? Or does the scorching sun slow them down?

Stick around... Sazi will reveal his answer at 12pm! 🕒

The temperature is climbing, and right now, hundreds of tiny maggots are wriggling through decaying waste, waiting to burst into a cloud of hungry flies. 🪰

Heat accelerates their life cycle, which means millions of dirty, twitching legs are about to land directly on your kitchen counters, your uncovered food, and your face while you nap. Every single surface they touch receives a regurgitated mixture of saliva and gut fluids just so they can feed.

You can feel the air getting heavier, and the low, relentless buzz is coming.

🐀 SAZI KNOWS… a rodent eats a single crumb, but ruins the whole pantry.

Rats and mice can contaminate food through droppings, urine, saliva and contact with contaminated surfaces.

That means a rodent getting into your pantry isn’t just a nuisance; it can turn food into a potential hygiene concern. 🍞

See signs of rodents? Protect the food first, then find the source.

🐜 SAZI SAYS… Your house is collapsing from within! You just can't see it yet.🏠

Termites don’t need to announce themselves.

They can work silently inside timber, roof structures, floorboards and other wooden parts of your home, gradually weakening the material from the inside.

By the time you notice hollow-sounding wood, mud tubes, tiny holes or unexplained damage, the problem may already be serious. ⚠️

The scariest part? You could be standing on termite-damaged timber without knowing it.

Don’t wait for the damage to become impossible to ignore. Know what’s happening inside your home before the structure starts telling you.

🐛 They’re not always coming into your home from outside. Sometimes, you bring them in with the food.

Stored product pests can infest dry goods such as flour, rice, pasta, cereals, grains, spices and pet food, and you may not notice them until the infestation is already established.

Small beetles, weevils and moths can hide in packaging, cupboards and food storage areas, contaminating food and spreading from one product to another.

That’s why a tiny insect in your pantry shouldn’t simply be brushed off. 👀

Check your dry goods regularly, keep food in sealed containers and clean pantry shelves to remove crumbs and spilt food.

And when pests keep appearing, don’t just remove the affected packet. Find the source of the infestation.

🪳 Cockroaches don’t just invade your kitchen. They can contaminate it.

Cockroaches can move through dirty and contaminated areas such as drains, bins and bathrooms before making their way onto kitchen surfaces, cupboards and food-storage areas.

Along the way, they can pick up microorganisms and transfer them onto food, utensils and surfaces used for food preparation. 🍽️⚠️

As temperatures rise, cockroach activity can increase, making it even more important to keep food protected and kitchen areas clean.

🔹 Keep food sealed and stored correctly.
🔹 Clean up crumbs, spills and food residue promptly.
🔹 Keep bins closed and emptied regularly.
🔹 Check cupboards, cracks and hidden areas for signs of activity.

Seeing a cockroach isn’t just unpleasant. It could be a food hygiene concern.

Don’t only deal with the cockroach you see. Find out what’s attracting them in the first place.

Before a fly lands on your kitchen counter, where has it been? 🪰

It could have been in a bin.
In a drain.
On waste.
Or even in faeces.

Then, moments later, it lands on the surface where you prepare your food.

Flies can move between waste, drains, contaminated areas and food, potentially carrying harmful microorganisms with them.

That’s why fly control isn’t just about keeping your home looking clean. 🧼

It’s about stopping what flies can carry from making its way onto the surfaces — and food — your family relies on.

This Food Safety Month, keep an eye on the places that attract flies and take action before they become a problem.

Keep flies out. Keep food safe. 🏠🍽️
