Globally, 83% of organizations are actively improving supply chain transparency. The number for Africa is significantly lower, but impressive nonetheless. The catch, however, is that while the intentions pertaining to transparency hold strong:

➡️ 45% of organizations still lack upstream visibility beyond their tier-one suppliers.
➡️ 67% rely on digital dashboards with very little data due diligence to support their numbers.

Following UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)'s latest report linking digital technologies directly to improved transparency; an uncomfortable truth is emerging. Africa's protracted uptake of supply chain tech is holding back end to end supply chain transparency and traceability. Along with all the benefits that come with it.

Supplier Relationships Are Risk Instruments.

Contracts don’t manage themselves, they're managed by people. And the relationships between the parties to a contract determine the quality of output each contract can attain. Strong supplier relationships aren’t about being “nice.” They’re about embedding governance, accountability, and improvement into the partnership.

In pursuit of a good partnership, ask yourself:
1️⃣ Do we meet monthly at the operational level and quarterly at the strategic level?
2️⃣ Do we maintain a joint risk register and action log?
3️⃣ Do we demand continuous improvement and innovation, and not just compliance?

Suppliers are an extensions of your risk profile. Treat them as such.

Most contract failures don’t happen in ex*****on. They happen in planning. Before a contract is approved and signed off. Below are just a few of the many questions organizations need to ask themselves before diving head first into contractual relationships:

1️⃣ Do we really need a formal contract for this work?
2️⃣ What risks are we ignoring (financial, operational, HSE, compliance)?
3️⃣ Are objectives clear across business, performance, risk, financial, governance, and innovation lenses?

Neglecting these questions means you’re flying blind. Contracts are risk instruments. When done right, they play an indispensable role in safeguarding value.

Consider:
👉 Using a scoring matrix to decide contract depth.
👉 Defining objectives beyond “buying something.”
👉 Baking risk assessments into the DNA of your process.

Contract KPIs That Actually Matter.

KPIs are commitments. Too many contracts drown in dashboards that measure everything; but manage nothing. The value derived from contracts is intrinsically tied to the KPI's and SLA's conditioned within it.

A good KPI is:
✅ Specific (one thing only)
✅ Measurable (no debate)
✅ Achievable (realistic baseline)
✅ Relevant (linked to objectives)
✅ Time‑bound (clear period)

Most importantly, KPIs must be linked to governance and consequences. If they’re not reported, discussed, and acted on; they may as well not exist.

For your next contract, consider doing the following:
👉 Separate “no‑fail” KPIs (safety, compliance) from performance and diagnostic ones.
👉 Tie incentives and penalties directly to KPI outcomes.
👉 Review and adjust targets after 3–6 months to reflect reality.

This week we're going to be looking at Contract Management. To begin, an interesting statistic. It is estimated that most (north of 73%) of all contract value leakages have nothing to do with “fraud”. They're driven by neglect.

Contract Value Leakages happens when:
▶️ Obligations aren’t tracked.
▶️ Discounts (and other financial entitlements) aren’t claimed.
▶️ Renewals slip through unnoticed.
▶️ Stakeholders bypass agreed terms.

The result of this is that value quietly drains away; not because of malice, but because of poor contract management discipline. While Fraud makes for exciting headlines. It’s Neglect that is responsible for the biggest chunk of value loss across the contract management lifecycle within most organizations. So how do we prevent neglect?

👉 Build visibility into obligations.
👉 Embed accountability into workflows.
👉 Treat contract management as a living practice, not a filing exercise.
