Sixteen years after the rescue of the 33 Chilean miners, their story continues to inspire new generations.

Esperanza: A Story of the Rescue of the 33 is an illustrated children's book written by Laurence Golborne, Chile's Minister of Mining at the time of the rescue. Gold Fields funded and supported the development of the book and recently delivered 160 copies to the Atacama Regional Education Secretariat for distribution to primary schools across the region.

The initiative forms part of Gold Fields' commitment to education and its ongoing work with communities in Atacama, helping bring an important chapter of Chile's mining history closer to students.

What started as a small biodiversity initiative at Gold Fields South Deep has grown into something with the potential to benefit both nature and local communities.

Since 2023, South Deep's apiary project has expanded from just 10 bee bunkers to a thriving apiary supporting healthy bee populations and stronger local ecosystems. While the bees help pollinate plants, strengthen biodiversity and support a thriving natural environment, the project's future impact reaches far beyond the mine's boundaries.

South Deep is exploring opportunities to partner with local farmers, helping improve crop pollination, enhance agricultural productivity and support sustainable livelihoods. By extending the benefits of the project into surrounding communities, the initiative aims to create shared value while promoting environmental stewardship.

From supporting nature to strengthening community resilience, this project demonstrates how small actions can contribute to meaningful and lasting change.

Gold Fields Cerro Corona is proud to announce the publication of its first international scientific paper, "Accelerated Composting for Sustainable Food Waste Management in Remote Mining Operations: A Comprehensive Assessment.

The study was developed by Edwin Zegarra, Environment, Water and Tailings Manager; Carlos Cueva, Environment Superintendent at Cerro Corona; and Diego Arán, Specialist Consultant. Its findings have been published in the international scientific journal Applied Sciences.

This research addresses a common challenge faced by mining operations in remote locations: the efficient management of organic waste. To address this challenge, the Cerro Corona team evaluated and implemented an accelerated composting system as a sustainable alternative to transform organic waste into a valuable resource.

At Gold Fields, we believe that the future of mining must be built on science, innovation, and continuous learning.
