Safety of children
• Parents need to know where their children are at all times.
• Do not leave children unattended. Always make sure when they are at the malls or shopping centres, that they have proper adult supervision.
• Remember that if a child goes missing, there is NO waiting period to report it. Time is of the essence, so alert authorities immediately!
• Always have a recent photo of your close family members.
• Parents please NEVER let your children swim in the pool/dams or rivers alone or unsupervised.
• Children who cannot swim should never be allowed in the water. An appeal is made to adults not to enter the water while under the influence of alcohol – practice water safety at all times.
• Save important emergency contact numbers on your kids’ phones. Also keep a printed list of these numbers close, like on your fridge or next to the landline, including those of your local SAPS station and your neighbours.
• Holidays are a great time for some fun excursions or trips to the beach, but should your child get lost they need to be able to provide someone with enough information to locate you. Help them to memorise their name and surname, home address and contact details for either parent. For toddlers who are too young to remember your contact details, use a permanent marker, write your name and phone number on their arm in case your child get lost.

Vehicle theft is currently a serious concern, specifically the increase in keyless car theft.

What is keyless car theft?
Keyless car theft is where the signal from a key for a so-called ‘keyless entry’ car is captured by somebody standing in proximity to the victim’s vehicle.

How it works:
Step 1 – The device transmits the signal to somebody else standing by the victim’s car.
Step 2 – This then fools the car into thinking the key is near it, allowing the doors to be opened and the ignition to be started.

How far do thieves need to be away from my car keys?
Keyless car theft happens when thieves are only within a few metres from your car keys to capture the signal.

How long does keyless car theft take to happen?
Keyless car theft can take only 20-30 seconds.

What device is used in keyless car theft?
Relay crime is when a specific type of specialist electronic equipment captures the signal from the key and transmits it to a receiver that somebody standing near the car has.

Is my car keyless entry?
If you have to push a button on your car keys to enter your car, you are not at risk of being hacked. Only vehicles with a keyless entry system can be stolen using relay equipment. Keyless entry cars allow the driver to unlock and start the vehicle with the key fob still in their pocket. Once in the car, the driver can press a button to start the engine.

Some safety tips:

- Use a signal-blocking pouch. A Faraday pouch will stop access to your vehicle by blocking your car key fob from transmitting its code to the vehicle, as the pouches are lined with layers of metallic material.

- Turn off your keyless fob’s wireless signal.

- Use a steering wheel lock.

- Re-programme your keys.

- If you buy a second-hand vehicle, there is a risk that you may not have received all of the sets of car keys. Reprogramming your car keys will also stop thieves from using stolen keys.

Safe keys are to be kept by Accountant or cashier, while main door offices are to be kept by security. Spliting of keys, eg, cash box to the cashier, lock cash box in safe, safe keys to accountant, main door and screen keys to security. Never allow one person to have, office, safe cash box, drawers keys. Bank your cash always.
