Registration is not the same as licensing.

In its 29 May 2026 update, government reported approximately 82,000 spaza shops registered nationally, 44,696 verified and about 15,000 with approved trading permits or licences.

If you are registered but still waiting for approval, keep your reference number and date-stamped proof, confirm the next municipal step and follow up in writing.

If food is handled on your premises, Regulation R638 requires a valid Certificate of Acceptability (COA). It is issued by the local authority after an Environmental Health Practitioner assesses the operation, and it is separate from your trading licence, zoning approval and CIPC registration.

Unsure whether your documents are ready?

Comment “COA”, check your municipality’s current requirements and visit www.spazaconnect.co.za for guided support.

Today is Global Handwashing Day — but clean hands should protect your customers every day. Check that your food premises have accessible handwashing facilities, potable water, soap and hygienic drying materials.

Take five minutes to inspect your setup, then comment DONE and tag another food-business owner to complete the check too.

Registration is only one step. What happens next matters.

On 9 October 2026, TimesLIVE reported that Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero was encouraging spaza shop owners to make use of available government grant support.

The report raises an important question: how can municipalities help businesses navigate the journey from registration to compliance and access to available support?

Business owners need clear information about documentation, applicable requirements and the next steps in the process. Municipalities need practical ways to manage business information, track applications and coordinate follow-ups.

Digital tools can help support these processes, making registration journeys easier to navigate for businesses and more organised for municipal teams.

In Mogale City, © supports municipal registration processes through guided registration, document submission, status tracking, field-based verification and follow-up.

© does not approve grants or issue permits. Its role is to support the registration process while the relevant authorities retain their decision-making responsibilities.

Building a stronger township economy requires clear processes, effective coordination and practical support for local businesses.

What can municipalities do to make the journey from registration to compliance easier for spaza shop owners?

Before you submit your application, check the small details that can cause delays.

Make sure you have:
• The required CIPC documents
• A valid ID
• A valid pest-control contract, where required
• A signed floor plan
• A recognised food-handler training certificate

One missing, expired or incorrect document can mean going back to fix your application.

Share this with your team or anyone preparing a food-business application, and use it as a quick check before you submit.

In July 2026, preliminary Public Protector findings highlighted gaps in food-safety oversight across Gauteng municipalities, including shortages of Environmental Health Practitioners.

The practical takeaway: do not wait for an inspection to uncover avoidable problems. Check handwashing facilities, storage, pest-control records and separation of raw and ready-to-eat food today.

If an EHP arrived now, what would you fix first?
