SANS 10142-1-2 HAS BEEN WITHDRAW – Everyone Needs to Move On

Anthony Schewitz – Regional Director, Highveld

SANS 10142-1-2 has been a topic of discussion for many years. Even today, it frequently resurfaces in various forms. The most common issues are supply authorities (municipalities, etc.) claiming they will update their rules once the document is published, or individuals and organisations sharing draft versions, misleading people into believing these are valid standards.

🚀 He Jumped From Space — and Broke the Sound Barrier! 💥

On October 14, 2012, Felix Baumgartner leapt from 128,100 ft above Earth and became the first person to go supersonic without a vehicle. 🌌

💨 843.6 mph (Mach 1.24)
⏱️ 4 minutes 20 seconds of freefall
🎯 Landed safely in New Mexico

What looked like a stunt was actually a scientific breakthrough — testing pressure suits, reentry safety, and pushing the limits of human endurance. 🧠🛰️

One man. One jump. A giant leap for aerospace science.

In South Africa, discarded satellite dishes painted black and fitted with copper coils are being repurposed as solar water heaters. The low-cost design heats water within minutes without electricity or gas, giving rural families access to hot water while reducing firewood use and carbon emissions.

Finland has activated the world’s largest sand battery in the town of Pornainen. Built by Polar Night Energy, the system delivers one megawatt of thermal power and can store up to 100 megawatt-hours of heat energy. That amount is enough to heat the town for a week in winter and almost a month in summer.

The battery uses crushed soapstone, a byproduct material, to store heat at 600 degrees Celsius. Surplus wind and solar electricity is used to heat the sand, and the stored energy is released through the district heating network when needed. The system loses only 10 to 15 percent of energy during storage and release.

By replacing oil completely and cutting wood chip use by 60 percent, the project reduces heating emissions by 70 percent. This makes it one of the most efficient large-scale renewable heat storage solutions in the world and a major step for clean energy innovation.
