This year marks the 46th anniversary of the 16 June 1976 student uprising in Soweto, when young people protested against imposition of Afrikaans by the apartheid regime as a medium of instruction. After 1994, the government declared 16 June as National Youth Day and June as Youth Month.

As outlined in the theme "Promoting sustainable livelihoods and resilience of young people for a better tomorrow", the call to action will be for youth to forge resilience and pursue opportunities for a sustainable livelihood, today and in the future. (https://www.gov.za/YouthDay2022).

At ELI, projects are specifically designed to include the youth and give them the opportunity to create sustainable livelihoods in the agricultural sector ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ–๐Ÿฅฆ๐Ÿฅ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‡

The economies of many African countries totally depend on agriculture, but many people have nothing to eat.

In October 2010 the African Union Summit in Kampala, Uganda, designated 30 October to be Africa Day of Food and Nutrition Security. This observance was established to attract commitments to achieve the ultimate goal of ending hunger in Africa.

ELI believes in the importance of agriculture development and training Agri-entrepreneurs to run sustainable businesses that will enable them to feed their families and ultimately their communities. We administer skills development programmes to make people more employable and live a better life.๐ŸŒฑ

Each year in early spring, people across the nation get together to eat, drink and be merry, celebrating what makes us all uniquely South African. September is Heritage Month with National Heritage Day celebrated on 24 September. Heritage Day was declared a public holiday in 1996 and, since then it has been a day that encourages us to celebrate our cultural traditions, communities and heritage.

South Africans mark the day by wearing traditional outfits, eating traditional foods, learning about different cultures and spending time with friends and family. In more recent years, National Heritage Day has become one and the same with National Braai (Barbecue) Day.

ELI celebrated Heritage day a little different this year. We came together in our office with some sushi and delicious platters while we shared interesting facts aswell as dance moves to embrace our cultures.

Whatever you choose to do to celebrate National Heritage Day, enjoy it with friends and family, wave the South African flag proudly, and remember your heritage and the place it holds in South Africaโ€™s multicultural landscape.

24 September was previously known in South Africa as Shaka Day, a day commemorating the Zulu King. He was known for uniting the Zulu clan and forming the Zulu nation. Every year, South Africans would gather at his grave to honor him. In 1995 a request for the day to be confirmed as an official holiday was rejected. Eventually, a compromise was reached, and it was decided that a national holiday would be created where South Africans of all cultures and creeds could come together and celebrate their diverse cultural heritage.

In an address marking Heritage Day in 1996, the late former State President Nelson Mandela said, โ€œWhen our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation.โ€

In its essence, the day embraces and celebrates the true meaning of why we call ourselves the Rainbow Nation.
