Over six days, 55 assessors, representing all 11 official languages of South Africa, successfully completed training for the Funda Uphumelele National Reading Study (FURS). The training took place at the Department of Basic Education (DBE) conference center, and aimed at preparing assessors for the implementation of the study in 110 schools across six provinces. The schools involved will reflect the diversity of South Africa’s linguistic landscape, encompassing all 11 official languages.

Key components of the training included strategies for reaching schools, sampling learners in Grades 1-4 and 6, and familiarization with Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) software. Assessors also received an overview of the various survey instruments and participated in a simulation/pilot study to practice their skills in real-world scenarios.

The GeoScope team managed the project coordination and fieldwork logistics, ensuring the smooth ex*****on of the training program. The team extends its heartfelt thanks to the assessors for their active participation and contribution throughout the sessions.

The assessors, who come from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, brought an incredible amount of positive energy and enthusiasm, reaffirming the commitment to fostering inclusivity in South Africa’s education system. The FURS study will be a critical step in assessing early reading levels across the country and driving data-driven policy interventions to improve literacy rates.

GeoScope South Africa recently conducted a comprehensive training program for fieldworkers tasked with intercept interviews at 20 McDonald’s restaurants in Pretoria and Durban. The aim was to define trade areas and gather customer insights to support McDonald’s expansion strategy. The training, held at Lynnwood Conference Centre, covered everything from survey objectives to mastering data collection software.

Fieldworkers were trained on the survey's technical and practical aspects, including setting up tablets with the data collection software, role-playing exercises, and an in-depth review of interview protocols. Emphasis was placed on ensuring quality assurance throughout the data collection process, with specific guidelines provided for conducting interviews at Drive-Thrus and in-store. A key highlight was using survey maps to capture essential data on customer journeys and behaviours.

The training culminated in a pilot survey, allowing field workers to test their skills in a real-world environment. Adjustments were made based on the pilot results to ensure smooth fieldwork operations. This thorough preparation ensures that GeoScope’s field teams are well-equipped to deliver valuable insights, contributing to McDonald’s strategic decision-making process for future restaurant locations.

Unemployment remains citizen’s key concern but corruption crisis rocketing

Four of the five problems that the public identify and consistently dominate across the South African Social Attitudes Survey (SASAS) and other nationally representative surveys, is unemployment, crime, corruption, and service delivery.

Unemployment has consistently been in the No.1 spot over the past two decades followed by crime and safety in the No.2 spot, which has tended to fluctuate up and down.

Corruption is ranked third or fourth now in the publics priority list and has rocketed upwards since 2017, where in 2003 only 10% of citizens had concerns about it, but is now heading up towards the 40% mark. The public are deeply concerned about the crisis of corruption.

The other problem that has surprisingly not been higher given our general concerns about different aspects is service delivery (eg electricity and load-shedding), which has consistently edged upwards towards the 30% mark. If the needs of the public and specific concerns are not addressed about service delivery, it is going to continue to trend upwards.
