Maximum Demand vs Time-of-Use Tariffs

Not all electricity tariffs work the same way.

Some customers are charged mainly for the energy used, “measured in kWh”.

Others are also charged for maximum demand, “the highest power drawn at one point in the month, measured in kVA or kW.”

Then there are time-of-use tariffs, where electricity costs more during peak periods and less during off-peak periods.

This matters when designing solar.

A solar system that reduces daytime energy may help with kWh savings.

A battery system may help shift usage away from expensive peak periods.

But if your bill includes maximum demand charges, the system also needs to consider your peak loads, not just your total monthly consumption.

Before installing solar, understand your tariff first.

The right design depends on how you are charged: Energy, demand, time-of-use, or a combination of all three.

What do you need to know when sizing a solar system?

A solar system should not be sized by guessing or copying what another house has.

Before sizing a system, you need to understand:
• Monthly electricity usage
• Daytime vs night-time consumption
• Peak loads
• Appliances that need backup
• Roof space and roof direction
• Battery backup requirements
• Budget
• Future expansion plans
• Electricity tariff structure

A home that wants lower electricity bills may need a different system from a home that mainly wants backup during outages.

A commercial property on maximum demand or time-of-use tariffs may need an even more detailed design approach.

Good solar design starts with understanding how the property actually uses electricity.

Grid-Tied Solar vs Backup Power

These are not always the same thing.

A grid-tied solar system is mainly designed to reduce your electricity bill during the day. It uses solar power while the sun is available, but it usually switches off when the grid goes down.

A backup power system is designed to keep selected appliances running during outages. This usually requires batteries and an inverter that can safely supply power when the grid is unavailable.

So the key question is:

Do you want to save electricity, keep the lights on during outages, or both?

For many homes, the best solution is a hybrid system that combines solar savings with battery backup.
