The first proper downpour is a poor time to discover your wipers have given up. 🌧️

East Rand drivers, here's a useful job for this month: give your car a rain-readiness check before the weather tests it for you. Whether your usual trip is across Springs, through Nigel or home after a long day, being able to see clearly—and be seen—deserves a little attention.

Start with the things you'll notice most when rain hits:

• Wipers and windscreen: Test the washers and blades while parked. If the blades leave streaks or miss sections, have them checked or replaced. Clean the glass inside and out, too.

• Lights: Check your headlights, brake lights and indicators. Working lights help other drivers notice you when visibility drops.

• A clear view: Know how to use your car's demister before you need it. Sort out visibility before setting off.

Then give your driving habits a wet-weather reset: slow down to suit the conditions, leave more following distance and brake earlier and gently. The usual travel time can wait; a clear view and room to stop matter more.

Quick boot check: if your car stopped on an East Rand road after dark, would your emergency kit genuinely help—or would you find an old receipt, one flat torch and a lot of good intentions? 🚗**

An emergency kit is one of those things we all mean to sort out “one day”. The trouble is, a flat tyre, dead battery or unexpected stop will not wait for one day. A few practical items, checked regularly, can make a stressful situation safer and easier to manage while you arrange help.

Give yourself **one point for each category** you already have in your vehicle:

1️⃣ **A reflective warning triangle and reflective vest** — visibility matters, especially at night or in poor weather. Only place a triangle if it is safe for you to do so.

2️⃣ **A working torch with spare batteries** — your phone's light is useful, but you may need to preserve your phone battery for calls and location sharing.

3️⃣ **A charged power bank and the correct charging cable** — a phone with power helps you call, WhatsApp, share your location and stay in contact.

4️⃣ **A basic first-aid kit** — check that it is stocked, sealed where necessary and still within its expiry dates.

5️⃣ **Tyre essentials** — a usable spare wheel, jack, wheel spanner and tyre-pressure gauge or compact inflator. Make sure the tools actually fit your vehicle and that the spare is not flat.

6️⃣ **Jumper cables** — useful for a flat battery, provided they are suitable for the vehicle and used correctly. If you are unsure, call for assistance rather than risking damage or injury.

7️⃣ **Water and simple weather protection** — bottled water, a light blanket and a rain poncho can make an unexpected wait far more manageable. Replace water regularly, especially after it has been stored through hot weather.

8️⃣ **Work gloves and a clean cloth** — small items, but very handy around a dirty wheel, battery area or roadside clean-up.

9️⃣ **A paper contact card** — write down an emergency contact, your insurer's details and JFJ Assist's number. It still works when your phone does not.

🔟 **A quick monthly kit check** — test the torch and power bank, inspect expiry dates and confirm that nothing has been removed and forgotten. A kit is only ready if its contents still work.

What to do if you see something suspicious ahead:
🛡️ Do not stop if it feels wrong
🔄 Slow down early and look for a way to turn around or reverse
👀 Scan both sides of the road for people hiding or waiting
🚗 Keep your doors locked and windows closed
📱 Call for help while still moving if possible
