The invaders draining our farms dry — and the fightback taking root in the Kouga

A slow-motion disaster is unfolding in our water catchments. The good news is that the same plants stealing our water can be turned into the resource that helps restore it — if we clear, convert, restore, and prove it was done right.

Every farmer in the Eastern Cape knows the feeling of watching a river run thinner than it did twenty years ago. What many of us have not been told plainly is why — and how much of it we can actually reverse.

The culprit is standing in our riverbeds and on our slopes. Dense stands of invasive alien plants — Black Wattle, Port Jackson, Rooikrans, Pine and Eucalyptus — have colonised the Kouga, Kromme and Baviaanskloof catchments that supply more than 70% of the water used by around 1.3 million people in and around Gqeberha, and by the agriculture that feeds off these valleys. The Kouga Mountains are a recognised Strategic Water Source Area. They are also, increasingly, an eroding, fire-prone, water-scarce one.

The damage is not subtle once you know what to look for. Black wattle draws on the order of seven times more water than the fynbos it replaces; dense riparian stands can transpire well over 1 500 mm a year, pulling moisture straight out of the soil and the river before it ever reaches a dam. Nationally, invasive plants are estimated to strip between 1.44 and 2.44 billion cubic metres of runoff every year — water that simply disappears into plants that should never have been there.

Then comes the compounding damage. Invasive roots destabilise riverbanks; floods scour them and carry the soil downstream as sediment that silts up our dams and permanently shrinks their storage. Land adjacent to the Baviaanskloof is degraded by as much as 70%, its natural sponge function lost. And the stands burn. The week-long firestorm that tore through the Kouga in January 2026 is the pattern we now face repeatedly — hotter fires on heavier alien fuel loads, followed by bare, water-repellent soil that erodes with the first heavy rain. For the farmer, it all lands in the same place: less water, thinner grazing, lost arable land, and clearing costs in the Kouga and Kromme that have run at more than double the national average.

The old model cleared — then burned the answer

South Africa's Working for Water programme has been rightly admired: launched in 1995, it has cleared well over a million hectares and put tens of thousands of people to work, most of them women. But it has always carried a structural gap. The cleared biomass is largely stacked and burned. We turn a carbon store into smoke, release it back to the sky, and the following season the wattle seedlings return in their millions. We have been treating the single most damaging thing in our catchment as waste, when it is in fact a resource of extraordinary value.

Clear, convert, restore — and let it pay for itself:

That is the gap the Kouga Catchment Restoration Initiative is built to close. The same invasive biomass, instead of being burned, is converted through Kon-Tiki flame-curtain pyrolysis into certified biochar — a stable carbon sink in which roughly three-quarters of the carbon resists decay for a thousand years and more. Returned to our depleted soils, biochar holds water through drought, holds nutrients against leaching, feeds soil life and cuts the fertiliser bill. The clearing restores water yield; the biochar restores soil and earns carbon revenue; and that revenue funds the next hectare of clearing. One intervention delivers across water, soil, climate, biodiversity, employment and the rural economy at once. This is not a paper concept — a live pilot in the catchment has already completed dozens of documented burns and produced thousands of kilograms of certified-quality biochar, with a full monitoring record and no failed burns.

Train and capacitate: the Centre of Excellence:

None of this scales without people who know how to do it properly. That is the job of the Centre of Excellence now being established on a working farm in the catchment — a one-stop training facility with the river, cleared blocks, a Nguni herd and live erosion features as its classroom. Through courses, workshops, practical field days and funder engagements, it trains landowners, crew leaders and rural work-seekers to read a landscape, assess and map erosion, clear invasives correctly, build the right erosion-control structures, produce biochar and restore soil. The aim is blunt: to turn the poorest of the poor into certified invasive-clearance and restoration specialists, and to fix the lessons learned from the old implementation — clearing that was done, but not always done well, and rarely followed up.

Monitor, report, verify — because trust is everything:

Here is what separates this from a good intention. Every step is measured. The operation runs under the Global Artisan C-Sink standard, with AgriGain registered as C-Sink Manager and independent verification by third parties accredited through Carbon Standards International. Digital monitoring, reporting and verification (dMRV) tracks each burn, each tonne of biochar and where it is applied, alongside the restoration indicators farmers care about — hectares cleared, water infiltration gained, sediment kept out of the dams. That discipline is not red tape; it is what turns cleared biomass into a verified, revenue-generating asset a bank, a government department or an investor can trust, and what lets the model be replicated across the country's stressed water source areas.

This affects all of us:

The thing that is destroying our catchment can become the thing that heals it. For farmers, that means water back in the rivers, soil back in the lands, and dignified work in the district instead of another season of loss. The invitation is open: come and see it, support it, or bring it to your own valley. The catchment does not belong to any one of us — but its recovery depends on all of us choosing custodianship over just taking from the land.
