It’s International Pinot Noir Day, and we’re beyond happy to share a little progress from one of our newest vineyard projects.

Our Pinot Noir block was only established in 2025, and while the vines are still waking up (with the first shoots now starting to show on some vines!!), the sour figs are already wide awake. 🌱

Indigenous to this area, sour fig is being trialled here as a living cover crop, with the hope that it will help counter erosion, improve soil stability and, ultimately, become part of a more resilient vineyard ecosystem.

It’s still early days, and there is plenty to learn. But watching these little plants establish themselves alongside our young Pinot Noir vines is incredibly encouraging.

While we’re in the midst of South African winter (greetings to Europe 😋), with pruning season kicking off on Monday, this is what keeps us dreaming; and warm: a chilled glass of Pinotage by the pool. ☀️🍷

Our Terroir Selection Pinotage is all about purity, elegance and the unmistakable minerality of the Springfontein Rim. A Pinotage that feels just as at home poolside on a summer afternoon as it does around a winter fire.

For now, we’re thoroughly enjoying the fireside version. But we can’t wait to (re)discover its poolside personality in the months ahead. 🙂

While one of the greatest rewards of growing vines and vinifying grapes is connecting with the people who enjoy it, yesterday brought a particularly special encounter.

From one side of the Atlantic to the other, sharing a bottle with Jo and Josh at The Galley was a true highlight. They are officially Springfontein’s northernmost ambassadors, and we couldn’t be prouder to be waving our flag this far north.

Since you liked the last one, we’re sharing another before-and-after picture to round off the week.

Here, we showcase the old main house entrance (now home to WORTELGAT Wine Dining) in 1996 and after its first modest transformation in 2000. For comparison, we’ve included the very same spots nearly 30 years later. Quite a bit of work happened along the way.

When we first came across the old farmhouse in 1995, it was completely run-down, with snakes inhabiting the roof. During the first years after acquiring the farm, the focus was on giving the main house some much-needed TLC while simultaneously planting our first vines and building and renovating the first accommodation units.

Back then, there was no cellar, no restaurant, and certainly no idea of what Springfontein would one day become. Just plenty of hard work, big dreams, and a fair amount of optimism.

Long before Springfontein became a wine estate, its story was already being written.

In May 1798, the Scottish travel writer and painter Lady Anne Barnard is believed to have passed through these lands on her journey from present-day Hermanus to Stanford, following the southern shores of the lagoon and the Klein River.

Springfontein itself was officially established on 1 June 1816, when the land was granted to Sir Johannes Andries Truter, then President of the Cape Supreme Court. The old farmhouse that still stands today (now home to our Wortelgat restaurant), as well as the old barn (now home to our ULUMBAZA Wine Bar(n)) is believed to be around 200 years old, with its carefully exposed stone walls quietly telling the story of generations past.

The estate takes its name from the bubbling spring ("spring" + "fontein") that rises in the north-eastern corner of the farm. While reliable water was abundant, farming the limestone-rich soils proved far more challenging. For decades, only small-scale livestock farming and modest onion and potato cultivation were possible.

Then, in 1983, all agricultural activity came to a halt.

It’s cruel, but it’s beautiful to see nature at work. The bird police were in full swing this afternoon, making sure the European starlings know who’s in charge of the vineyard. Hopefully the message spreads before next harvest season 😌🤭

And for anyone wondering: we love our birds and are incredibly proud of the diverse and unique ecosystem that thrives here. There are just a few species we appreciate a little less when the grapes start ripening: the European starling and the Cape bulbul, our resident grape thieves. 🍇🐦

Our Riverlodge sits quietly on the edge of the Klein River, opening up to wide, uninterrupted views of water, birdlife, and the soft curve of the valley beyond. Inside, the suite blends understated comfort with a strong sense of place. It’s not about excess, but about being exactly where you’re meant to be: between limestone hills, vineyards, and water that never seems to rush. On display is our Riverview Suite 1, one of three suites in the Lodge.

Limestone in South Africa is exceptionally rare!

Most South African vineyards are rooted in ancient granite, shale or sandstone. True limestone soils (especially those rich in active calcium carbonate!) occur only in a few coastal pockets. That makes these sites something truly uncommon in a South African context.

Within our monopole ward "Springfontein Rim", this becomes more than geology; it becomes identity. Here, limestone-derived soils carry the imprint of ancient marine life, compressed over millions of years, still shaping the vineyard today. You can quite literally read ocean history in the rocks beneath the vines.

For the vine, limestone is a quiet architect.
It offers deep water buffering while maintaining excellent drainage, pushing roots downward in search of balance and stability. The calcium-rich environment naturally restrains vigour, often resulting in smaller berries, greater phenolic concentration, and a slow, even ripening.

And in the wine?
There is a signature of tension and precision. Bright natural acidity, fine structure, and a subtle saline edge that feels almost coastal in character. Not loud, but persistent.

Springfontein Rim shows how powerful this expression can be in a South African landscape dominated by very different soils. A reminder that terroir here is not only about climate, but also about rare fragments of ancient seabed brought back to life in the glass.
