Limestone Rocks!

We love the way Chenin Blanc and Pinotage grow on it, and with the help of the cool Atlantic breeze that comes up the Klein River Lagoon, we've got some special terroir here !

Our Riverlodge sits quietly on the edge of the Klein River, opening up to wide, uninterrupted views of water, birdlife, and the soft curve of the valley beyond. Wake up to reflections on the river, spend slow mornings on your private balcony, and let the golden light do what it does best here—turn everything into stillness.

Inside, the suite blends understated comfort with a strong sense of place. It’s not about excess, but about being exactly where you’re meant to be: between limestone hills, vineyards, and water that never seems to rush. On display is our Riverview Suite 1, one of three suites in the Lodge.

What you can see is a pure expression of our Springfontein River Lodge—simple, grounded, and deeply connected to its landscape.

We are looking forward to see you!🥳

Limestone in South Africa is exceptionally rare!

Most South African vineyards are rooted in ancient granite, shale or sandstone. True limestone soils (especially those rich in active calcium carbonate!) occur only in a few coastal pockets. That makes these sites something truly uncommon in a South African context.

Within our monopole ward "Springfontein Rim", this becomes more than geology; it becomes identity. Here, limestone-derived soils carry the imprint of ancient marine life, compressed over millions of years, still shaping the vineyard today. You can quite literally read ocean history in the rocks beneath the vines.

For the vine, limestone is a quiet architect.
It offers deep water buffering while maintaining excellent drainage, pushing roots downward in search of balance and stability. The calcium-rich environment naturally restrains vigour, often resulting in smaller berries, greater phenolic concentration, and a slow, even ripening.

And in the wine?
There is a signature of tension and precision. Bright natural acidity, fine structure, and a subtle saline edge that feels almost coastal in character. Not loud, but persistent.

Springfontein Rim shows how powerful this expression can be in a South African landscape dominated by very different soils. A reminder that terroir here is not only about climate, but also about rare fragments of ancient seabed brought back to life in the glass.

What a mad week it has been. Mother Nature truly showed her full force, and we sustained some significant damage across the farm. Thankfully, everyone is safe, the clean-up continues, and now it’s about looking ahead.

While the week started with chaos, it ended with some beautiful sunshine. Perfect conditions to dry our olives naturally in the sun. Instead of sharing pictures of destruction, we decided to rather show a glimpse of Mother Nature’s beautiful side.

From stormy skies to golden light — life on the farm never stands still.

The view that simply never gets old.
Our vines overlooking the Klein River Valley, shaped by limestone soils, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding fynbos vegetation. On the opposite side, the mountains guard the valley and help create our cool-climate conditions.

This is our monopole ward: Springfontein Rim.

Join us for a warm and relaxed Mother’s Day lunch surrounded by good food, good wine, and the crackling fire from every angle.

For the last-minute planners: we still have a few tables available for tomorrow.

Golden hour from above hits differently.
Our hospitality area, our cellar, and that endless Overberg horizon - seen the way only a drone can capture it. A place to slow down, taste, and take it all in.

Come experience it from the ground… or just enjoy the view from the sky for now.

Pop in for a relaxed glass of wine, explore our current releases — with a few surprises along the way — and enjoy a wide range of delicacies for lunch or dinner.
