A dedicated entrepreneur with a thriving business, built over years of serving her market well. In other words, an outstanding investment opportunity. But without some of the formal systems investors usually look for, she wouldn’t make it through conventional screening processes, and everyone misses out.

Her story points to a question we keep returning to: are we using an incomplete lens to see African opportunity?

At our recent Redemptive Africa Collective gathering in Ghana, fund managers, entrepreneurs, and investors explored how to keep a high standard of excellence while shifting the lens through which we see opportunity. Honesty, accountability, and healthy returns stay non-negotiable. But many of the tools we use to test them were designed for other contexts, and when the tool doesn’t fit, good businesses get missed.

Here’s a place to start. Take one tool you use often, such as a due diligence checklist, loan terms or a reporting template, and ask two questions: what standard is it protecting, and who might it be leaving out?

This is slow, shared work. No single fund or firm can reshape the landscape, but if we come together we can meaningfully change how opportunity on this continent is seen.

Is ethical enough? Doing no harm, playing fair, being honest — that's good. It's just not uniquely Christian.

Ethical says: don't make things worse. Redemptive says: actively make things better. Bear the cost, take the risk, give of yourself to restore what's broken, because that's what Christ did for you.

In our "Reframed Revisited" podcast series, we have been pulling the golden threads of African thought leadership we have collected over the years that focus on redemptive investment. In our second and third episodes, a recurring theme emerges: real change requires a long-term vision.

If we want to build and invest in ways that meaningfully transform people, places, and sectors across Africa, we must move past instant gratification. At the heart of redemptive action is sacrifice - in this case, choosing patient stewardship over short-term gain. It requires us to plant seeds for a meaningful, lasting harvest, rather than just being satisfied in putting bread on our own tables today. Growing people, companies, communities, and societies requires humility and patience.
