After five decades for these dryland Bushvines, some of the older arms do, over time, died back from necrosis. These granite soils are lean, the winds are honest, and the vines have earned every one of their scars (and some built up pruning errors every now and then. It happens)

Today we carefully cut off those specific spent and dried out arms from compromised vines. Then hand sleigh each piece out with our 'covercrop sledge'. A slow but serious procedure that takes time.

Not out of haste, but out of respect — making space and light for potential strong new shoots that will carry the vine forward. Filling their space on the vine. Bringing back balance and a tidy system for a hopeful further 5 decades.

These old bushvines have given us so much. Our job is simply to listen, respond gently, and help create the best environment for them so that they can be at their best.

Scions of Sinai takes its name from a granite hill in the Lower Helderberg, but the wines have never been about geography alone. They are about memory, family, and vineyards that deserved another chapter. Bernhard Bredell has built one of Stellenbosch’s most distinctive collections from old vines and thoughtful farming, producing wines that speak with precision rather than volume.

Each new vintage seems to just add another layer of focus. Bernhard’s love for the vineyards and soils is pulpable and each encounter leaves one richer and wiser. This special connection to nature and people translates in each bottle. These are truly wines with soul.
Each bottle carries the hallmark of Scions of Sinai. Freshness. Detail. A sense of place. Wines that reward attention without demanding it.

We’ve seen over the years how different wines each have their own following.
Granietsteen Chenin Blanc – one of the best expressions of this maritime granite site, and the best vintage to date!
Gramadoelas Grenache Blanc – If you found the vineyard, you’re lost. It’s not just the site that’s unique. This is compelling to say the least. Floral and wild fennel
Heldervallei Cinsault – Capturing the sunshine, keeping the brightness
Krummelkip Cabernet Sauvignon – Aromatic with spice and tight tannins
Feniks Pinotage – Concentrated and dense vintage, still staying bright
Swanesang Syrah – Earthy, Umami, meaty, white pepper and tealeaf

There’s a quiet confidence to Scions of Sinai wines - honest, site-driven wines with the name rooted in the heritage of the Bredell family and the vineyards around Sinai Hill.
The Granietsteen Chenin Blanc and Single Vineyard Gramadoelas Grenache Blanc are textured and aromatic, with the Atlantikus Pinotage and Swanesang Syrahs, showing purity, delicious spiceness and impressive depth.
