Chefchaouen, Morocco

Also known as Chaouen, this is one of the most picturesque destinations in the country.

The city, which is built in the Rif mountains, has a charming medina that features winding alleyways, doorways and plazas; all coloured in many shades of blue.

By some accounts, the sand dune we see in our image may be the world's tallest. But whether it takes the top spot or not, Cerro Blanco—at some 3,860 feet tall—is certainly in the top two or three.

The massive dune rises over the Sechura Desert, a place full of extraordinary landscapes. This coastal desert stretches nearly 2,000 square miles between the Pacific Ocean and the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Peru.

One of the most arid places on Earth, the Sechura Desert is perhaps best known not for what nature has created, but for what humankind has crafted: The Nazca Lines.

These geoglyphs are hundreds of geometric patterns and representational figures (including spiders, birds, and monkeys), some of them spanning miles.

They were carved between 200 BCE and 600 CE by the ancient Nazca people into the desert's hillsides and flatlands.

Waimea Canyon, Kauai, Hawaii

When imagining the Hawaiian Islands, an incredible beach may be the first thing that pops to mind, but there’s much more here besides white sand and sparkling surf.

This image shows Waimea Canyon, a vast geological wonder cut deep into the western interior of Kauai, the fourth-largest island in the chain.

The gorge is known as the ‘Grand Canyon of the Pacific’ and it earns the comparison: At 10 miles long and reaching depths of 900 metres at some points, Waimea makes a big impression.

Lungern, Switzerland

Surrounded on three sides by mountains of the Swiss Alps, the municipality of Lungern sits more than 600 metres above sea level.

The water line you see in our image has retreated and advanced, but not due to natural causes.

During the 18th century, the people of Lungern began the arduous process of lowering the lake’s water level to obtain more land for settling and farming.

Within a century this reclaimed land was lost when a dam and reservoir were created to power a hydroelectric plant.
