Activating dogs through runaways.(Fire trails )

Please note I use the terms tracking and mantrailing interchangeably as I think good dogs use both when working its more a case of semantics.

Tracking vs. Mantrailing: The Facts

​There is often confusion between these two disciplines, but the mechanics are fundamentally different. Here is the breakdown:
​TRACKING (Footstep Precision)
​The Focus: The dog follows the exact path of ground disturbance (crushed vegetation, turned soil).

​The Posture: "Deep nose." The dog keeps its head low, smelling the physical footprints.
​The Goal: Precision. The dog must stay strictly on the track laid by the walker, often identifying dropped articles along the way.
​The Scent: Primarily relies on the scent of the ground disturbance rather than the specific human odor.

​MANTRAILING (Scent Discrimination)
​The Focus: The dog follows the specific scent trail of an individual person (skin rafts and particles).
​The Posture: Variable. The dog may have its head up (air scenting) or down, depending on where the scent has drifted.
​The Goal: The Find. The dog follows the scent cone, which may be yards away from the actual walking path due to wind or terrain.
​The Scent: Relies on discriminating a specific human’s unique odor from a scent article presented at the start.
​In short: Tracking is about following footsteps. Mantrailing is about following the person.

Why does scent discrimination matter in mantrailing?

In a real search scenario, there are dozens—sometimes hundreds—of scent trails in any given area. Other searchers, bystanders, people who walked through hours or days before, even the K9 handler themselves are all leaving scent.

Without scent discrimination, a trailing dog would just follow the freshest or strongest scent available—which could be anyone. That's why mantrailing dogs are trained to identify and commit to ONE specific person's scent from a scent article before beginning their search.
This ability allows the dog to filter through all that "scent noise" and stay focused on their target. It's what separates mantrailing from general trailing. The dog isn't just looking for "a human"—they're looking for THIS human.
This specificity is crucial when searching in areas with multiple people, contaminated scenes, or situations where you need to distinguish between a missing person and those searching for them. It's the foundation that makes mantrailing an effective, targeted search method rather than a guessing game.
The training to build strong scent discrimination takes time, patience, and proper methodology—but it's what makes the difference between a dog that trails and a dog that trails reliably.
