Human Rights Day: We Rise by Lifting Others
March 21st marks Human Rights Day in South Africa, a day that reminds us of our painful past and the ongoing journey toward a more just and equal society. The tragic events of Sharpeville in 1960, where peaceful protestors lost their lives, serve as a powerful lesson: violence divides, but unity builds.
As we face new challenges today, let’s remember that more violence will not heal our nation or move us forward. True progress comes from standing together, lifting each other up, and fostering understanding.
Dan Heymann’s Weeping (written during the apartheid era) reminds us that injustice cannot be ignored—it lingers in the shadows until we confront it with compassion and action. The new version of Weeping, performed by Vusi Mahlasela, featuring Karen Zoid and Albert Frost, carries forward the legacy of this powerful message.
Today, we choose to rise, to build, and to stand together for a better South Africa.
