OVER 800 MINING JOBS ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK AROUND EMALAHLENI

Glencore has become the latest mining company to kick off a Section 189 retrenchment process which will affect more than 200 workers at its Mpumalanga operation.

Fin24 said the company had submitted a request to the CCMA for facilitation as it plans to retrench 214 employees at its iMpunzi Coal in eMalahleni. Glencore cited Transnet Freight Rail's poor performance as a key consideration behind proposed retrenchments.

Transnet, which transports the coal from mines in Mpumalanga province to Richards Bay Coal Terminal, has been battling with sabotage, cable theft and ageing equipment. Using trucks to transport coal from mines to the coast has also become less attractive after coal prices dropped.

The Glencore retrenchment process comes on top of others in the coal heartlands of Mpumalanga, causing increased concern over job losses among organised labour. Seriti Resources kicked off a sizeable retrenchment process at its Klipspruit mine earlier this month, which will affect 605 quality jobs.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said their calls on government to intervene at Transnet had fallen onto deaf ears.
