South Africa's government has released proposed rules that would let adults legally possess 750 grams of cannabis. That's enough for roughly two thousand joints. The draft regulations also set limits on how many plants can be grown in a private space and detail how cannabis must be transported, like keeping it out of sight in a vehicle's boot. These rules are the next step to bring the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act into full effect, following a 2018 court decision that legalized private use.
These new proposals aren't perfect yet. Legal experts point to some grey areas, like whether the 750-gram limit refers to dry cannabis or includes its heavier, freshly harvested weight. Another unclear point is whether the limits on cultivation apply to each adult in a home or to the entire private property itself. The government is asking for public comments until March 5th to help clear up these questions. It's a move to finish a law that's been years in the making, though the rules still don't cover selling or commercially growing cannabis, which is a separate issue still being worked on.
