He wasn’t a pet. He wasn’t a mascot. In the 1880s, a baboon became one of the most trusted “employees” at a railway station — and stunned everyone who met him

Jack the baboon didn’t just hang around the tracks.
He worked there.
Day after day.
Calm. Focused. Smarter than anyone expected an animal could be.

He learned the station’s routines like a seasoned employee.
Guided passengers with surprising accuracy.
Helped with daily tasks.
Recognized regular commuters by face alone.
And followed instructions with a level of discipline that left crowds speechless.

People started arriving early just to watch him.
Not because he was a novelty…
but because he moved through the station like he belonged behind the platform — alert, steady, completely in sync with the rhythm of human life.

Jack didn’t break rules or cause chaos.
He didn’t act wild.
He observed.
Learned.
Adapted.
And somehow became the quiet, unexpected heart of the station.

His presence reminded people of something we often forget:
Animals understand far more than we give them credit for.
Sometimes they step into our world with a gentleness and intelligence that feels almost human.

Fun Fact:
Jack was so dependable that the railway officially put him on the payroll — paying him in food, lodging, and a weekly ration of beer.

Some stories stay with us because they show how deeply animals can connect with us… even in the most unexpected places.

Maybe I’m not good enough. So why do I even try? Why am I even here? They don’t like me. They don’t want me around. Why am I still going even though I keep failing? I’m useless.

Thoughts can be plagues too, and if we allow them to control our hearts they end up being such powerful dictators of our lives. And rather than keeping them in check, we feel enslaved to them. I find that so many people are doing everything in their human power to avoid down time simply so these thoughts don’t come up. They do everything to avoid the quiet moments so all of the shame, guilt, depression and sorrow of our lives stays at bay. And then we burn out and it all comes up in unmanageable ways, and we find ourselves struggling.

Instead take time to remember you dictate your thoughts. You don’t have to give in to what they say. Survival is about choosing our battles and our wars, and knowing the difference that sometimes even our own minds can play tricks on us. Tricksy little brainses. There’s any number of reasons this is the case but the result remains the same - you are not your thoughts. It’s a hard thing to separate, but try it.

Whenever I’m going through a bout of the above I try to laugh and say actually it’s pretty good here, even amidst the darkest points of my life. I try to remember there’s more to come, even when it feels impossible.

Keep going. Keep fighting. 1924
