Meet our Wine of the Month: Provenance Shiraz 2023

Provenance is a word from the art world. It refers to the origin and history of a piece - the notes, receipts or details that tell you where it came from.

With wine, provenance matters too.
It is found in the vineyard, the vintage, the soil, the cellar and the hands that make it. It is the reason a wine tastes the way it does, and why it belongs to a particular place and moment.

The Saronsberg Provenance Shiraz 2023 is full-bodied, with soft textured tannins, red berry and black fruit flavours, floral notes and subtle fynbos nuances. It has a smooth, silky finish that makes it especially well suited to cooler evenings and generous winter meals.

Available from Saronsberg Cellar and online:

A bottle of wine always feels different after youโ€™ve tasted it straight from the farm ๐Ÿท

Maybe itโ€™s because youโ€™ve seen the vineyards it grew in, sat beneath the mountains surrounding our cellar, or heard the story behind the wine while it was being poured into your glass. Whatever it is, the connection changes the experience.

At Saronsberg Cellar, there are two ways to explore that experience.

Our Classic Tasting (R160 pp) is a relaxed introduction to the farm and the range, featuring a selection of whites, rosรฉ, and reds. Itโ€™s ideal if youโ€™d like to spend time in the tasting room, discover the wines at your own pace, and experience a little of everything Saronsberg is known for.

The Full Circle Tasting

(R220 pp) takes a more focused approach. This tasting explores the Rhรดne varietals and blending philosophy behind our flagship Full Circle, alongside our Cap Classique. Itโ€™s a guided experience that gives deeper insight into the vineyard, cellar decisions, and how each varietal contributes to the final wine in your glass.

If youโ€™d like to stay a little longer, our charcuterie board for two includes cheeses, meats, nuts, olives, preserves, crackers, and fruit.

Tasting Room Hours:
Mon-Fri: 10amโ€“5pm
Sat & Public Holidays: 10amโ€“2pm
Sun: 10amโ€“1pm

Thereโ€™s always a place waiting for you at the tasting table.

Wine Terms You Need to Know: Edition 2
Fermentation & Maturation

These are two of the most important stages in winemaking, but they are often confused.

Fermentation is where the wine begins. It is the process where yeast converts the natural sugars in grapes into alcohol, creating the base of the wine.

Maturation is what happens after fermentation. This is when the wine is given time to develop, soften, and gain complexity, whether in tank, barrel, bottle, or a combination of these.

Together, they influence everything from aroma and texture to structure, balance, and ageability.

Have you seen Edition 1 of our Wine Terms You Need to Know series? We covered some of the most common tasting terms, including nose, body, mouthfeel, acidity and tannins.

Save both as your wine terminology cheat sheets for your next tasting.

What do a fireplace, a bottle of Shiraz, and nowhere to be have in common?
A winter stay in our vineyard cottages.

Settle in, light the fire, and pour a glass of Saronsberg wine while the valley cools down outside. Each cottage gives you the space to cook a proper meal, stay in for the evening, and enjoy winter at your own pace.

Beyond the warmth inside, the farm takes on a different character at this time of year. Quiet mornings. Frost across the vineyards. Snow on the mountains when the weather allows. A quieter way to experience Saronsberg, with good wine close by.

If youโ€™re looking for a winter break at Saronsberg, our vineyard cottages are ready for you.

Behind every tasting at Saronsberg is a team that makes the experience feel personal from the moment you arrive.

Leonie and Janine are often among the first faces to welcome you into the tasting room, guiding you through the wines and helping you discover the styles that suit you best. Alongside them, Henro-Lene, Kundai and Rechante share the stories behind our award-winning wines, bringing a deeper understanding of our wines, our farm, and what makes Saronsberg what it is.

Theyโ€™re the people pouring your glass, answering your questions, recommending your next tasting, and making sure your time with us feels easy and enjoyable.

Next time you visit Saronsberg, take a seat, order a tasting, and come meet the Wine Ambassadors behind the experience.

Saronsberg and Tulbagh Begin the Clean-up After Severe Storm

After three days without power, cell signal or internet connection, Saronsberg, along with much of Tulbagh, is slowly returning to normal following a severe winter storm.

The storm brought relentless rain, strong winds and gusts of up to 100 km/h. At Sneeusig, in the centre of the farm, 320 mm of rain was recorded, while the Welgegund slopes of the Saronsberg mountain received an extraordinary 400 mm.

Long-time Tulbagh farmers have described it as one of the worst storms they have experienced.

While branches, leaves and debris remain part of the clean-up ahead, we are grateful that the damage at Saronsberg is repairable. Our thoughts are with our neighbours, surrounding farms and nearby towns that suffered severe damage, flooding and road closures.

The Nuwekloof Pass into Tulbagh is open once again, and Saronsberg is welcoming guests.

Clean-up efforts continue.
