“We follow different management approaches across our respective macadamia farms. On the farm where we adopt a more holistic approach by incorporating biological products and regular parasitoid releases, stink bug pressure has declined significantly and remains much lower than on the farms where parasitoids and biologicals are not used.
On our holistic farm, we have gone up to eight weeks without any insecticide sprays. Even during unfavourable weather conditions, when we are unable to access the orchards, I have peace of mind knowing that the biologicals and parasitoid releases remain active and continue working. Rather than being forced to wait for conditions to improve, they continue providing protection even when we cannot be in the orchard.”

A tiny number with a huge impact..

In macadamias, 3% isn’t just a number - it’s a threshold that can cost growers hundreds of thousands of rands. Many processors begin applying quality penalties when insect-damaged kernels exceed around 3% of a representative sample.

In South African macadamia orchards, the two spotted stink bug (Bathycoelia distincta) is the most dominant and destructive insect pest, with adults responsible for yield losses of up to R200 million annually. Even small increases in stink bug damage can significantly reduce the value of an entire crop, making it critical to keep insect-damaged kernels below processor specifications.

The numbers don't lie.. 📈

On one of our programme farms in Mpumalanga:
-QC unsound rates dropped from over 4% to under 1%.
-Spray counts were cut in half.
-Egg mass parasitism reached between 70 and 90%.

This is not a trial result.
