πŸ”₯ FIRE SEASON OFFICIALLY STARTS TODAY! πŸ”₯
1 JUNE 2026 – Stay Vigilant. Burn Responsibly. Protect Our Communities.

The 1st of June marks the official start of the 2026 Fire Season within the Letaba FPA area.

As fire risk increases during the dry winter months, all landowners and residents are reminded that controlled burning may only take place under safe conditions and with the necessary authorization.

βœ… Controlled burns are permitted until 31 July 2026
βœ… A valid Burning Permit is required before any burning activity takes place to ensure weather and fuel conditions are suitable
❌ No burning is permitted on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, or public holidays

Fire prevention is a shared responsibility. Early reporting of uncontrolled fires allows for a rapid response and can significantly reduce damage to lives, property, agriculture, and the environment.

πŸ“ž Report uncontrolled fires immediately:
β€’ Letaba FPA Fireline: 076 844 1646
β€’ Letaba FPA Fires WhatsApp Group

Together, through responsible burning practices and rapid reporting, we can help keep our communities safe throughout the fire season.

WHAT IS THE FIRE DANGER INDEX ?

As fire season places increased pressure on landowners, firefighters, and emergency response teams, understanding the Fire Danger Index (FDI) becomes a critical part of veldfire prevention and preparedness.

The Fire Danger Index is an early warning system used during fire season to project the level of fire danger for the day. It takes into account the nature of available flammable fuel together with daily weather forecasts and environmental conditions to determine how fires may behave if they start.

The Fire Danger Rating is calculated using a combination of:
β€’ Temperature
β€’ Wind direction and wind speed
β€’ Rainfall
β€’ Relative humidity

To maintain accuracy, readings are taken twice daily, at 10h00 and again at 14h00, before being entered into the Fire Danger Rating Table.

The system uses five colour-coded categories:

πŸ”΅ SAFE (0–20)
Low hazard conditions.
🟒 MODERATE (21–45)
Controlled burning can be safely executed under suitable conditions.
🟑 DANGEROUS (46–60)
Controlled burning is not recommended.
🟠 VERY DANGEROUS (61–75)
Any fire must be attacked with maximum force.
πŸ”΄ EXTREME DANGER (76–100)
Fire teams must be on full standby. Any fire must be brought under control immediately, with available aircraft activated without delay.

Understanding daily FDI conditions helps landowners make informed decisions, improves preparedness, and supports safer veldfire management across our region.

Fire awareness saves property, livelihoods, and lives.

As veld fire season intensifies, safety on the road and in the veld becomes critically important. Smoke, reduced visibility, and fast-moving fires can create life-threatening situations within minutes.

🚨 If you encounter smoke on the road:
β€’ Drastically reduce speed and remain on full alert.
β€’ Never drive through thick smoke or flames ; serious accidents often occur when drivers lose visibility or collide with unseen hazards.
β€’ Switch on headlights and hazard lights to increase visibility for other road users and emergency response vehicles.

πŸš— If caught in your vehicle during a veldfire:
β€’ Your vehicle can provide valuable protection.
β€’ Move to a clear area away from grass and dense vegetation if possible.
β€’ Stay inside your vehicle, leaving it can expose you to extreme danger.
β€’ Close windows and air vents, switch off the ignition, and stay low until the fire front has passed.
β€’ Once safe, inspect your vehicle before continuing.

πŸ”₯ If you are on foot and a veldfire starts:
β€’ Move away immediately, never assume a fire is too far away to be dangerous.
β€’ Fires moving uphill can spread at alarming speed, especially on steep slopes.
β€’ If escape is not possible, locate a Safe Zone; a burnt area, wide road, or large clear space free of vegetation.

Remember: panic can cost lives. Heat and lack of breathable air are often the greatest dangers during a fire emergency.

Preparedness, awareness, and calm decision-making save lives.
Let’s work together to protect our communities, our families, and our landscapes this fire season.
