Not an excuse, an actual industry thing: South Africa has a genuine shortage of qualified electricians right now — worse, according to the trade press, than the tech talent shortage everyone keeps talking about. Every registered contractor you call is dealing with the same full book.

So here's the honest version of what that means for you: the guy who can start tomorrow probably isn't registered, probably won't give you a COC, and probably won't be around if it fails. The wait with us is the vetting other customers already did for you.

We'll give you a real date, not a runaround. Tell us what you need done. 📲 +27 83 215 1124 · anictom.com

Power-surge claims are up. Payouts aren't following at the same rate. Insurers have gotten a lot more interested in whether your installation was actually compliant before the damage happened — and "it just blew up, I swear" isn't evidence.

The VoltFlow report already checks what they check: earthing, bonding, DB condition, RCDs, the lot. R35 for a document that might save you a R30,000 argument with your insurer later. Do the maths.

That "register your solar by March or get disconnected" message doing the rounds? Half the panic is justified, half of it isn't — and almost nobody's explaining which half is which. So here's the straight version: what SSEG registration actually is, who it genuinely applies to, why energy analysts themselves are arguing with municipalities about enforcement, and what actually happens if you just... don't.

Short version: if you're grid-tied, it's worth doing. If you're panicking because of a Facebook post, maybe not.

Got solar or a battery and not sure where you stand? Send us your system details on WhatsApp — we'll tell you straight, no upsell. 📲 +27 83 215 1124

"Do you have a valid Certificate of Compliance?" is a question most homeowners only hear from their insurer once, and it's usually right after something's already gone wrong.

A COC isn't just paperwork for a sale. It's what your insurer can ask for the moment you claim on anything electrical — a fire, a burst geyser, even a break-in where the alarm or gate motor's wiring comes into question. No valid COC, and "declined" is a real possible answer, not a scare tactic.

The catch: a COC issued 15 years ago for the house you bought doesn't cover the DB board you upgraded five years ago, or the solar you added last winter. Every material change needs its own sign-off.

Two minutes to check what you actually have on file beats finding out during a claim.

Two solar quotes for the same size system, thousands apart — it's rarely because one company is just "cheaper." It's usually because one of them left something out.

No COC on the install — solar still has to meet SANS 10142-1 like the rest of your house. Skip it and you've got panels on your roof and no paper trail if there's ever a fire, a claim, or a resale.
Undersized cabling — the difference between a cable rated for the job and one that's "probably fine" doesn't show up on day one. It shows up as heat, voltage drop, and eventually a fault.
No proper earthing or surge protection on the DB board — the exact thing that's supposed to protect the system you just paid for.
Labour-only pricing that assumes nothing goes wrong — no allowance for a DB board that needs upgrading first, which it usually does on an older home.

The cheaper quote isn't wrong to want. Just make sure you know what's missing before you sign it.

If you installed solar this winter, spring is when you'll first notice the dust.

Pretoria East's dry, windy September-October stretch settles a fine layer on panels faster than most people expect — and a dusty panel can lose somewhere between 10-25% of its output without looking obviously dirty from the ground.

Check your inverter app for a dip against a clear-sky day, not just "is it still working."
Rinse with plain water, early morning or late afternoon — never a hot panel with cold water.
Skip the dish soap — it streaks and attracts more dust.
If your panels are on a steep or awkward roof, this is a call-out, not a DIY job.

Already have a system in with us? A clean and output check is a quick add-on to any other visit.

We ran VoltFlow against real site photos while building it. Three fails it flagged that most people — and some quick inspections — walk straight past:

RCD rated wrong — a 100mA or 300mA earth leakage unit where the standard requires 30mA on socket, bathroom and outdoor circuits. It looks like protection. It isn't, not at the level that protects a person.
Geyser on a single-pole breaker — the standard requires a dedicated double-pole breaker, local isolator and its own earth. Single-pole setups are common in older homes and quietly non-compliant.
Bonding missing in the bathroom — every metal fitting a person could touch at once (bath, taps, towel rail) needs to be bonded together. Skip it, and a bathroom that looks finished isn't signed-off-safe.

None of these are visible from across the room. Upload your own photo to VoltFlow and see what it finds — the clause lookup costs nothing, and the R35 report spells out exactly why and what to fix if something comes back flagged.

You don't need to be an electrician to find out if your DB board is a problem. You need your phone and about 30 seconds.

VoltFlow is the AI compliance tool we built and put online for anyone to use — not just our own team. Upload a photo of your DB board, geyser circuit, bathroom wiring, whatever's worrying you, and it's cross-checked against a manually verified copy of SANS 10142-1. Not a general AI guess — we checked every clause against the actual standard ourselves.

Upload a photo from your phone.
VoltFlow matches it against the relevant SANS 10142-1 clauses in seconds.
Clause lookup is free. Want the full picture — every compliance call, severity rating and corrective action, as a PDF you can keep or hand to an agent, bank or insurer — that's a R35 report.

It's a second opinion, not a Certificate of Compliance — a registered inspector still has to sign off the real thing. But it tells you exactly what to expect before anyone sets foot on site.

Try it free on your own DB board — link in bio, or WhatsApp +27 83 215 1124

We ran the Winter Special's numbers against 4 years of Eskom's own tariff data.

Your electricity is already about 72% more expensive than in 2022, and that trend isn't reversing — Eskom's own debt and maintenance backlog see to that.

R99,500 buys a full 12kW solar and battery system, installed: Luxpower 12kW inverter, 3x Hina ESS Hi-5 batteries, 12x 620W panels, full install kit and cabling — supplied, installed and COC'd.

On an example Pretoria East home spending ~R3,500/month on Eskom, offsetting ~85% of that usage saves about R3,000/month. At today's tariff alone that's under 3 years. Add a conservative 10%/year future increase (below the last 4 years' average) and payback lands closer to 2 years 7 months.

After that, every tariff increase pays you instead of costing you — over 10 years, roughly R573,000 back against a R99,500 cost. Illustrative example, not a promise, but the direction is clear.
