Tackling Grapevine Leafroll: Insights on Grapevine Leafroll Disease. 🍇🌱

Herman Rossouw presented an insightful talk on leafroll disease and
associated virus (GLRaV-3) which was hosted by Introlab at the Paardeberg Wine
Cellar.

The session explored GLRaV-3’s impact on production and grape quality, how to
accurately identify symptoms, and which common disorders are often mistaken for
leafroll. Herman also highlighted the vectors involved, disease spread patterns,
and the steps of an integrated control strategy — with a strong focus on roguing of
infected vines, mealybug control and continuous monitoring.

As part of the session, Herman showcased the Patho Solutions GLRaV-
3, and GLRaV-1 and -3 ELISA test kits, designed to help clients effectively detect
infected vines — supporting better monitoring and management.

A big thank you to Introlab for hosting the event, and to everyone who joined this
valuable discussion aimed at protecting vineyard health and ensuring sustainable
production.

Roselyn Pear – Virus Status Update

Roselyn pears have occasionally shown symptoms such as leaf curling and reduced vigour in certain regions. These symptoms may arise from factors, including but not limited to viruses. Last month, SAPO and Culdevco hosted an information session in Ceres to share important updates on the virus status of the Roselyn pear variety.

Recent next-generation sequencing (NGS), ELISA and PCR tests have confirmed that the nucleus Roselyn plant material is completely free of viruses, ensuring that the foundation of this cultivar remains clean and secure. While some viruses were detected in field-collected material, this does not mean they are responsible for the observed symptoms. Further studies are underway to establish the true cause, which may involve multiple factors.

Why is this significant?

This work is significant because, once a cause is identified, effective management practices can be developed to improve tree health, yields, and longevity. The process reflects a commitment to transparency and collaboration, ensuring that every step is guided by sound science and the best interests of growers. Culdevco, as the IP owner, remains fully committed to protecting the integrity of Roselyn and ensuring growers have access to the best possible plant material.
