Today is World Environment Day! ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฟThis year, the UN highlights three main emergencies our planet is faced with: habitat loss, warming temperatures, and pollution. Now more than ever, we need to realise the importance of the natural world in the survival of humanity.

Did you know that African Elephants only occupy approximately 15% of their historical range? The African Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana) was reclassified from vulnerable to endangered, with the species facing many threats from an increase in ivory poaching to habitat fragmentation.

Protecting environments for elephants allows for the conservation of a vast amount of species, including humans. A healthy environment is critical for all. It's time to take action.

Megamelus, miggies or midges??
Water hyacinth cover is down to 19% at Hartbeespoort Dam. Biological control is proving its worth, third year in a row on this system.
Our team was back at the dam this past week, and can confirm:
1. Megamelus and the Neochetina weevils are working well to damage the plants - you'll notice how brown and sad they are looking.
2. There are swarms of insects at night, and during the day. BUT 90% of these insects are midges/miggies. These insects explode in warmer months, and in response to poor water quality. They can survive as larvae in polluted water because they have high levels of haemoglobin which makes them red. Their common name is bloodworm! The haemoglobin allows them to take up the small amount of available oxygen in the water.
3. Megamelus does not bite! Miggies bite! They're called biting midges.
So please acknowledge the hard work that the biocontrol agents are doing for Harties :)

We recently conducted a survey in Northwest Province, 30km from the Botswana border. It was great to see different bushveld vegetation, returning home with a generous plant list. The greater area has very little development and it was an interesting experience to spend time there in conjunction with Emross Consulting. We look forward to finalizing this report for our client.

Field book recommendation: We find this book to be a great help in the field, with accurate and beautiful illustrations of pioneer plants, bulbs and other relevant generally-overlooked bushveld plants.
