Renowned for creating wines of distinction from the Paarl region that can be sampled in the relaxed The windmill was probably the finest in the country.

Windmeul Cellar is situated on the Northern Slopes of the Paarl Mountain in the heart of the Paarl Wine lands. The mill, to which Windmeul owes its name, was the center of economic activity in the area, at its time. There were twenty-seven mills in the Paarl area with the only one windmill being in Agter-Paarl. Research so far has revealed that the windmill, built by Mr Blake, a paarl miller, was probably erected some time between 1884 and 1890. In this year the post office agency, called Windmeul, was established in Agter-Paarl alongside the mill. All that is now left is a shed that used to be one of the old millstones of a local school. Although the undertaking has passed into oblivion, the name Windmeul has remained and was adopted when a co-operative wine cellar was established in the area in 1944. The Windmeul Co-operative Cellar was registered on the 4th of September 1944 with twenty-three founder members. The 1946 crop was then the first to be pressed at Windmeul Cellar. A new wine center was officially opened by Mr J Scannell (Distell) on the 14th of October 2006. Now Windmeul is run by an elite team consisting of a 7 member board. The cellar has the capacity to process 14 500 tonnes of grapes, taken from 1700 hectares of vineyard from the various producing members.

𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐊 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝟐𝟔 𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐊𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐒, 𝐃𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐄
After 26 years at Windmeul Cellar, Cellar Master Danie Marais retired at the end of September 2026, marking the end of an important chapter in Windmeul's history and a 42-year career in the South African w**e industry.

Since joining Windmeul at the end of 1999, Danie has played an important role in the cellar's continued growth and development. From strengthening its bottled and bulk w**e businesses to the development of the W**e Centre, Farmers Market and Waterblommetjie Festival, his contribution extends well beyond w**emaking.

Throughout his years at Windmeul, Danie worked alongside the board, members and staff, whose collective dedication, together with the support of valued customers, has contributed to the cellar's continued success.

Reflecting on his time at Windmeul, Danie shared:
“𝘿𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙙𝙞𝙚 𝙖𝙛𝙜𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙚 𝟮𝟲 𝙟𝙖𝙖𝙧 𝙫𝙞𝙧 𝙢𝙮 '𝙣 𝙖𝙗𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚 𝙫𝙤𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙜 𝙤𝙢 𝙙𝙚𝙚𝙡 𝙩𝙚 𝙠𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙨 𝙫𝙖𝙣 𝙙𝙞𝙚 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙢𝙚𝙪𝙡 𝙆𝙚𝙡𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙣.”

He also expressed his appreciation to those who supported him along the way:

𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀 𝐋𝐄𝐆𝐀𝐂𝐘 🌳
Just before his retirement after 26 years at Windmeul Cellar, Cellar Master Danie Marais marked one of his final days at the cellar in a very special way.

Fittingly, during September, both Heritage Month and National Arbor Month, seventeen trees were planted across the Windmeul grounds to mark the occasion.

For Danie, the development of the Windmeul grounds has always been particularly close to his heart. In his own words, planting these trees was “die kersie op die koek” after 26 years at Windmeul.

“Ek sal die geleentheid altyd onthou, asook die deelname en ondersteuning van lede en ander rolspelers. Mag die bome ’n verdere bydrae lewer tot die ontspanne atmosfeer op hierdie pragtige perseel.”

As these trees grow in the years ahead, they will continue to add shade, beauty and life to the Windmeul grounds.

This Heritage Day, we’re looking back at our Waterblommetjie Festival, where potjies simmered, Windmeul w**es were shared and friends and families gathered to enjoy a taste of the Paarl w**elands.

From traditional waterblommetjiepotjie to local produce, handmade goods and live music, it was a celebration of the flavours, traditions and people that make days at Windmeul so special.
