Job Readiness Workshop | Appreciation post

My heart is so full after Saturday’s workshop.

It was so inspiring to spend time with individuals who, despite facing real challenges, continue to show up, are eager to learn and never give up.

Job hunting requires a lot of courage, and I saw so much of that resilience on Saturday.

My biggest takeaway for the group was simple: Employers aren't looking for perfect people. They are looking for people who are reliable, willing to learn, and show up with a positive attitude.

If you are currently on the job hunt, remember these key essentials:
✔️ Keep your CV updated and tailored.
✔️ Practice your interview skills.
✔️ Believe the unique value you bring to the table.
✔️ Don’t give up.

Current HR status:
Holding the entire workplace together with coffee, compliance, deep breaths, and what can only be described as emotional support balloons.

Somehow HR is expected to:
recruit the perfect candidate,
onboard new employees,
manage leave balances,
survive payroll week,
understand labour law,
handle disciplinary hearings,
mediate workplace conflict,
motivate exhausted teams,
support managers,
protect company culture,
and still respond professionally to emails that start with:
“Quick question…”

(We all know it is never a quick question.)

Meanwhile someone is crying in the office, someone forgot to submit timesheets again, management wants urgent recruitment by tomorrow morning, and an employee has confidently said:
“But nobody told me that.”
…even though HR definitely has the signed policy acknowledgment. 👀

and despite all the chaos, pressure, deadlines, policies, and last-minute emergencies, HR still shows up every day trying to make workplaces better for people.

Because behind every policy is a person.
Behind every payroll run is someone feeding a family.
And behind every strong business is usually an HR professional quietly fixing problems nobody else even noticed yet.

HR is not for the weak.
But somehow… we still smile professionally in meetings.

This award is incredibly special to me, but not for the reason most people might think…

Being named one of the 100 Most Admired Women 2026 by AdvantageClub.ai is an honour, but more than that, it’s a reflection of something I’ve believed from the very beginning of my career:

HR is not a support function. It is a leadership function.

Over the past eight years, building Human Resources at Africa Biomass Company has never been about ticking boxes or following processes for the sake of it.

It has been about making decisions that shape culture, influence leadership, and impact real people.

A week after the devastating storm hit the Breede River Valley and Winelands, many families are still hurting. 💔

This past week reminded me that HR is not only about policies and offices — it’s about people, compassion and showing up when it matters most.

From opening my home for warm showers, electricity and support, to visiting affected families and handing out soup and bread, every small act of kindness mattered.

Through Boland Boudjies, we donated blankets, clothing and essentials to mothers and children in need. Through my involvement with Worcester Ladies Circle 38 we also assisted with water storage bins for Huis Andries Hamman during this difficult time.

So grateful to be part of a community that continues to stand together.

HR involves policies, processes, and paperwork, but sometimes…it looks like this!
Rolling in wood chips, laughing, and remembering why I started.

Somewhere between payroll, hearings, recruitment targets, and compliance, it’s easy to forget that HR was never meant to be just administrative. It was meant to be human.

Every CV I review is a person, every policy I implement affects a life, and every decision I make reaches beyond the workplace, into families and futures.
That’s something I never want to lose sight of.

To every HR professional feeling overwhelmed by processes and pressure: Don’t forget why you chose this path!

We didn’t choose HR to manage paperwork, we chose it to make a difference… to build workplaces where people feel seen, valued, and where they can grow.

When you stay connected to the people, you stay connected to your purpose.

In June, I am hosting a free practical workshop focused on preparing you for the job market and interview process.
