GOVERNMENT will give farmers almost 20 tonnes of maize seed and more than 6,700 bags fertiliser as compensation for the damage caused to crops on over 840 hectares of farmland by the flash floods.
Southern Province Minister Credo Nanjuwa said an estimated 846 hectares of land has been damaged by the flash floods, which also ravaged houses in parts of the province.
“The total hectares affected is 846 hectares in the Bweengwa and Hamusankwe areas in Monze.
“So we are expecting to provide 1,692 early maturity seed, which is the 10kg bags, and also 3,384 D-compound fertiliser and 3,384 top dressing fertiliser.
“For now, we only have those updates. We will have more updates when we do an aerial survey tomorrow [today] over Choma, Dundumwezi, Monze and Pemba, where most of the water that is affecting Bweengwa is actually coming from,” Mr Nanjuwa said in an interview.
He also said the aerial survey, to be jointly conducted by the Zambia Air Force and Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), will focus on dams to assess their condition.
With more rains anticipated, Mr Nanjuwa said the evaluation will determine the interventions required by Government.
After assessing the damage on Sunday, Mr Nanjuwa said President Hakainde Hichilema was concerned over the suffering experienced by families affected by the floods, stating that the head of State wants the situation resolved urgently.
