The current, unusual dry spell at a time when normal rainfall should be starting, is a clear indicator of the effects of climate change. We should always be working towards implementation of mitigation measures and adaptation systems that will help build resilience, now and in the future.

Zambia's deforestation rate, at 250,000 to 300,000 hectares of forests lost per year is among the highest in Africa. As we approach the National Tree ☘️ Planting Day i.e 24 November, let us start planning to plant one or more trees. This is a worthwhile investment whose return benefits both societies and the environment. CTF Building Resilience.

Rosewood is a hardwood timber tree species. It matures at around 80 years. In the last five years, there has been rapid harvesting of rosewood in the North Western Province, raising concerns among conservationists! The concerns are justified by the lack of vigorous reforestation programmes. However, CTF notes that rosewood can be cultured and replanted. The Forestry Department in Zambezi District grows and distributes rosewood seedlings at local level, a good step forward in preserving this great tree species. Let's build resilience using trees.

Chitambo Tree Farm is pleased with the presence of the Forestry Department in Chitambo District. We were welcomed by highly organized, informed and knowledgeable officers regarding tree issues and forestry in the district. We look forward to strengthening our engagement with them now, and in the future as we grow our tree business.

In the Miombo eco region of Zambia, woodlands that have been disturbed through charcoal production and shifting agriculture have always shown that they can recover provided considerable fallow times are given. The challenge lies in rapid population growth, industrialization and associated human activities which create higher demand for forest products. Consequently, Zambia has one of the highest deforestation rates in the world at 250,000 to 300,000 hectares of forest loss per annum. We must act aggressively to slow down deforestation.

Below is the Umutondo (Bemba) indigenous tree in the Miombo woodland of Central Zambia. It hosts the complete life cycles of wild edible caterpillars (ifishimu) which play an important role in the local people's diet and nutrition. The caterpillars are a crucial source of seasonal income as they are highly sought after by consumers in urban markets of Zambia.
However, with the high levels of deforestation, 'poor harvesting techniques', and land use change in preference to arable crop farming, Umutondo trees are rapidly declining in abundance. Consequently, the associated caterpillars might disappear and this will translate to loss of nutrition and income for the locals.
How best can this indigenous tree species be preserved?
