⚡ CAUSES OF VOLTAGE DROP IN A HOUSE — WHY DO YOUR LIGHTS DIM?

Have you ever noticed your lights becoming dim when a heavy appliance starts? Or your socket voltage dropping when you switch on a water pump, cooker, or iron?

That could be voltage drop. Here are the common causes:

🔌 1. Undersized cables
Using a cable that is too small for the load increases resistance and causes voltage loss.

📏 2. Long cable runs
The longer the cable, the greater the voltage drop—especially when the load current is high.

🔥 3. Loose or poorly terminated connections
Loose terminals, switches, breakers, sockets, or joints create extra resistance and can cause voltage drop and overheating.

⚡ 4. Overloaded circuits
Too many appliances on one circuit increase current flow, resulting in greater voltage loss.

🏚️ 5. Poor-quality or damaged cables
Old, damaged, corroded, or poor-quality conductors can increase resistance.

🔋 6. Low supply voltage
Sometimes the problem isn't inside the house. A low incoming supply voltage can affect the entire installation.

💡 EFFECTS OF VOLTAGE DROP
• Dimming or flickering lights
• Motors struggling to start
• Appliances overheating
• Reduced equipment performance
• Increased energy losses

👷‍♂️ As an electrician, don't just increase the breaker size. First identify the cause, measure the voltage under load, check connections, confirm cable size, and assess the length of the circuit.

A properly designed electrical installation should deliver the correct voltage to the load. ⚡

WHY DOES AN INDUSTRIAL MOTOR TRIP IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING? ⚡🔧

Have you ever started an industrial motor and the breaker or overload trips immediately? Don’t just keep resetting it. There is usually an electrical or mechanical fault that needs to be investigated.

Here are some common causes:

🔹 1. Short circuit
A short between phases, phase-to-earth, or damaged winding can cause very high current and immediate tripping.

🔹 2. Wrong motor connection
A motor incorrectly connected in STAR or DELTA can draw excessive current and trip the protection.

🔹 3. Overload or locked rotor
If the motor is mechanically jammed, the shaft cannot rotate properly. The motor may draw very high starting current.

🔹 4. Phase loss
A missing phase, loose terminal, blown fuse, or faulty contactor can cause abnormal current and motor tripping.

🔹 5. Incorrect overload relay setting
If the overload relay is set below the motor's rated current, it may trip during starting.

🔹 6. Low or unbalanced voltage
Low voltage or significant voltage imbalance can cause the motor to draw excessive current.

🔹 7. Bearing or mechanical problems
Damaged bearings, a seized pump, tight gearbox, or overloaded machine can prevent the motor from accelerating normally.

🔹 8. Motor winding fault
A winding-to-winding or winding-to-earth fault can cause immediate protection operation.

🧰 WHAT SHOULD YOU CHECK?

Before repeatedly resetting the breaker:

✅ Check the supply voltage and phase sequence.
✅ Check for phase loss and voltage imbalance.
✅ Inspect contactors and terminals for loose connections.
✅ Check the motor's STAR/DELTA connection.
✅ Measure the motor current with a clamp meter.
✅ Check the overload relay setting against the motor nameplate.
✅ Check whether the motor shaft and driven equipment rotate freely.
✅ Test the motor windings and insulation where appropriate.

⚠️ Important: The trip is a warning that something may be wrong. Repeatedly resetting the protection without finding the cause can damage the motor, starter, or cables.

Question for electricians:
👉 When an industrial motor trips immediately after starting, what is the first thing you check?

WHY DO MOTORS BURN EVEN WHEN AN OVERLOAD RELAY IS INSTALLED? ⚡🔥

A common question in industrial electrical work is: “If the motor has an overload relay, why did it still burn?”

The answer is simple: an overload relay is important protection, but it does not protect against every motor fault.

Here are some common reasons:

🔴 1. WRONG OVERLOAD SETTING
If the overload is set higher than the motor’s rated full-load current, it may not trip when the motor is overheating.

🔴 2. SINGLE PHASING
If one phase is lost, the motor can continue running while drawing excessive current in the remaining phases. This can cause rapid overheating.

🔴 3. PHASE IMBALANCE
Unequal phase voltages or currents can create excessive heating even when the average current does not immediately reach the overload trip level.

🔴 4. JAMMED OR OVERLOADED MECHANICAL LOAD
A seized bearing, tight pump, blocked conveyor or other mechanical problem can make the motor work beyond its normal capacity.

🔴 5. POOR CONNECTIONS
Loose terminals, burnt contactor contacts or damaged cables can create voltage imbalance and heating.

🔴 6. WRONG OVERLOAD CLASS
Motor starting current and starting time matter. If the overload class is not suitable for the application, protection may not operate correctly.

🔴 7. OVERLOAD RELAY FAILURE
Like any device, an overload relay can become faulty, incorrectly wired, or fail to trip.

🔴 8. OTHER FAULTS
Short circuits, insulation breakdown, locked rotor conditions and cooling problems may require additional protection.

🛠️ HOW TO PROTECT THE MOTOR

✅ Set the overload according to the motor nameplate and manufacturer requirements.
✅ Check all three phase currents.
✅ Check phase-to-phase voltage balance.
✅ Inspect contactor terminals and cable connections.
✅ Use phase-failure/phase-sequence protection where appropriate.
✅ Ensure proper motor cooling and ventilation.
✅ Use short-circuit and earth-fault protection in addition to overload protection.
✅ Test protective device
