When you see six cables running from the motor terminal block to the control panel, with no bridges connecting the terminals, it is likely a star-delta connection.

A star-delta starter is a cost-effective way to reduce the high starting current of an electric motor.

But there is something worth discussing.

I have seen this on several installations. Factories choose star-delta starters over Softstarters or VFDs to reduce installation costs, but consider a motor located 70 metres from its control panel that requires a 50 mm² cable. In some cases, they end up running two sets of 50 mm² cables (instead of smaller cables) to complete the star-delta connection.

Wouldn't the cost of the additional cables, installation labour, cable tray space and termination work offset the savings they expected from using a star-delta starter?
Could a soft starter actually be cheaper when you consider the total installation cost, rather than just the cost of the starter itself?

I would like to hear from engineers who have designed or installed both systems. Are factories really saving money with star-delta starters, or are they overlooking the cost of the additional cabling?

How to Check Running and Starting Winding in Single Phase Motor

To identify and check the running (main) winding and starting (auxiliary) winding of a single-phase induction motor, use a multimeter with the motor completely disconnected from the power supply.

1. Identify the winding terminals

For a typical 3-terminal motor:

Common (C)

Running/Main (R)

Starting/Auxiliary (S)

Measure resistance between all three pairs:

Measurement Typical result

C → R Lower resistance
C → S Higher resistance
R → S Highest resistance

The reason is:

R–S ≈ (C–R) + (C–S)

2. Example

Suppose your measurements are:

C–R = 3 Ω

C–S = 7 Ω

R–S = 10 Ω

Therefore:

3 Ω winding → Running winding

7 Ω winding → Starting winding

10 Ω → Series combination of both

3. Check whether the windings are healthy

Continuity:
Both windings should show continuity. An OL/infinite reading indicates an open winding.

Winding-to-body insulation:
Measure from each winding terminal to the motor frame. You should get very high resistance. A low resistance indicates insulation leakage/ground fault.

Important: Resistance values vary considerably with motor size and design, so don't judge a winding as faulty from resistance alone.

⚡ WHAT CAUSES ELECTRICAL TERMINALS TO OVERHEAT? 🔥

Have you ever opened a panel and found a terminal or breaker badly burnt? 😳

Common causes include:

🔌 1. Loose connections – A loose terminal creates high resistance, producing heat.

⚡ 2. Overloading – Too much current flowing through a terminal can cause excessive heating.

🧰 3. Undersized conductor – A cable that is too small for the load can overheat.

🔩 4. Poor crimping – A poorly crimped lug creates a weak, high-resistance connection.

💧 5. Moisture/corrosion – Corroded terminals increase resistance and heat.

🔥 6. Damaged terminals – Burnt, cracked or worn terminals may no longer make proper contact.

👉 Important: Don't just replace a burnt terminal. Find out WHY it overheated before energizing the circuit again.
