HOW TO LIVE HAPPILY AS A DEPENDANT
There are times you may have to be kept by people who are not your parents. The Zambian Times is here to give you very free advise. If you follow it to the letter, you will be happy.
Firstly understand that those people are not your parents. The way they give you attention may not be according to your expectation. You may not be as free as you would love to be. They may not favour you over their children. But be grateful over one thing; they have allowed you to live in their home. There is no greater favour than that one. Comfort yourself by the fact that they have given you shelter.
Don't be an inconvenience to them. Study their rules and keep them religiously, regardless of how unfair they maybe. Usually dependants attempt to be rebels and human rights activities in a home that is not their parent's. This route never works. Their hatred for you will increase. In short be humble. The Zambian Times can assure you that all those things you are experiencing will never last forever. You will be free sooner than you expect.
Be useful not useless. You are fool if all you do is wake up, bath, eat, watch tv and eat some more. When they come back from work, they find the house is still as dirty as they left it. You can't wash plates because you are scared your nails will break. You are a fool. That is why you are not treated well.
If you a girl, wake up early and sweep the house if there is no maid. Bath those children and feed them. But work hand in hand with the lady of the house so she doesn't feel you want to take her place.
If you are a boy, look for work outside the yard. Slash the tall grass. Make a garden and plant the necessary vegetables. When ever you are sent, don't refuse. Do all the work with humility. When you are being rebuked, never talk back. Always look for what to do and not wait to be told. When you notice that pots are too dark, wake up make shiny again.
Be trustworthy such that even when they are not home, their heart will not be troubled as long as you are home. Control your appetite. Don't eat what you have not been offered to eat. Stay away from their money. When they send you to buy something, bring back change.
Get permission when you leave home. Stop coming back home when it is too late. You are not normal if you come back later than the owners of the house. Let darkness find you home. Avoid being a reporter who enjoys creating problems for their children. Only report when it is very necessary. Avoid fighting back when you are provoked.
Most importantly, never do anything so you are praised, or make others feel useless. Do your work knowing it is your duty as a child. Remember to always greet your guardians in the morning with respect.
The Zambian Times wants to assure you that you will never be kept forever. Just concetrate on your school. As you do your house chores, study your books too.Not long from now, you will also have your own home. You will forget about your suffering. God is great.
