MUZ PRESIDENT LASHES OUT AT POOR MINE WORKERS CONDITIONS
The Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) President, Joseph Chewe, has spoken out strongly against the deplorable working conditions and low salaries faced by miners, particularly those working in Chinese-owned mines.
Speaking at Katilungu MUZ Headquarters in Kitwe, Chewe emphasized the urgent need for a sectoral minimum wage to improve the welfare of miners, who are currently being paid far below the country's monthly food basket of around K10,000.
"The situation is unacceptable," Chewe said passionately. "Our members are struggling to make ends meet, and it's time to protect their interests."
He said MUZ is advocating for better working conditions, improved safety standards, and fair compensation for miners.
Mr. Chewe made these comments when he interacted with miners who paid a courtesy call on him at his office.
His comments highlight the ongoing challenges faced by miners in Zambia and the Union's commitment to fighting for their rights.
