Zambian, USA soldiers sharpen skills together

ZAMBIA and the United States of America (USA) have maintained strong military ties based on shared democratic ideals and active military engagements.

In order to train alongside Zambian Special Forces in diverse combat missions, the American Special Forces Operation Detachment Alpha 3235 oversaw a seven-week Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET) at the Special Forces Training School in Mbala.

The two nations' close ties and shared commitment to security cooperation in the areas of force management, modernisation and professional military training for the Zambia Defence Force were underscored by this exchange of military expertise.

The US Special Forces team worked with members of the Zambia Special Forces Training School, 1 Commando, and 48 Marine Units to smoothen their special operations and methods between the two countries.

Special Forces Group Commander, Brigadier General Charles Swana who applauded the participants for their performance and high standards during the exercises and training said the purpose of the training was to promote military knowledge exchange.

And the US Detachment Commander, Captain Cody Brown said the Zambian Special Forces are professional, tough and are always committed to duty as displayed during the seven-week training.

Capt Brown asserted that they are capable of offensive actions, airborne, waterborne, and land operations, as well as special reconnaissance and surveillance in hostile environments.

Among the lessons covered include combat marksmanship, law of armed conflicts, bilateral operations, small unit tactics and maritime operations.

Others were specialisation in skills training, close quarter battle, heavy weapons, counter improvised explosive devices, urban movement, urban reconnaissance, personal security, paramedics, combat diving and navigation.

ALEBWELEPO: Lungu makes changes to PF leadership*

Last week, sources within Lungu's circle told that the former president had recognised Nakacinda as a critical component of his plan to return to the helm of the PF and ultimately appear on the 2026 presidential ballot.

The sources also hinted that Lungu promised PF vice-president Given Lubinda that for his loyalty, he would make him running mate.

Lungu then instructed Lubinda to announce Nakacinda as the Secretary General.

In line with that directive, Lubinda announced the appointments during a press briefing at the party's secretariat in Lusaka today.

Speaking during the briefing, Lubinda also claimed that "Alebwelepo", the PF's 2021 election campaign song, was prophetic.

"Balya baimbile nyimbo that group in Lukasha, abaimbile balya ati Alebwelepo ni prophecy. Alebwelepo (That group from Lukasha that sang he is coming back, it was a prophecy. He is coming back).

"Akekala pesa? Bakatupangila icipuna
(Where will he sit? They will make a chair for us)," said Lubinda.

We continued our tour of duty here in Shenzhen, China with a visit to BYD (Build Your Dream), a company that is among the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturers, by volume of sales.

Through their Chairman and founder, Wang Chuanfu, we invited BYD to consider investing in Zambia that has the right mineral resources necessary for producing their components.

We are determined to make Zambia an industrial hub by value addition to our minerals and create jobs and business opportunities for our people.

Zambia is currently heavily stressed with petroleum bills which has contributed to pushing the cost of living high, hence our intention to gradually migrate to electrical vehicles especially for public service transportation.

These innovations will equally reduce vehicle emissions and help addressing environmental challenges as we deal with climate change.

We are further looking forward to exciting and mind stimulating opportunities for our citizens, especially our young people wanting to venture into engineering.

BYD has a workforce of 700,000 people, with 70,000 being engineers. Their policy is for each engineer to innovate a new project or idea EVERY DAY. As a result, this company patents a new project every 15 days. What a way to keep our young people fully involved in innovation on a daily basis.

This afternoon in Shenzhen, we toured the Yantian International Container Terminal, one of the largest deep-water ports in the world.

It was humbling to learn that in the 1970s this sea port was a quiet fishing village in Shenzhen with few commercial prospects.

But due to rapid Chinese economic transformation coupled with dedication and hard work by the citizens of this country, this port has now been transformed into a world-class piece of infrastructure that handles millions of container cargo yearly.

Operating 24 hours, seven days a week, it was gratifying to note how they have adopted environmentally friendly technology.

These are the companies that we are inviting to partner with us and develop our inland port infrastructure such as Mpulungu harbour and other dry ports around the country to enhance our imports and exports in the region.

We are very clear in our minds how local and international investments can rapidly transform our country for the betterment of our citizens.
