The Today Issue.
Colorism
colorism can be defined as Prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic/ racial group.
or It is the social marginalized and systematic oppression of people with darker skin tones and the privileging of people with lighter skin tones.
Dr. Sarah L.Webb - of Colorism Healing.
(Note: Racism discriminates against people based on their racial identity while Colorism discriminates based on the shade or tone of a person's complexion.)
People of different races can have the same skin tone and/while people of the same race can have different skin tones.
This means that this kind of bias can happen even among people of the same race or ethnicity. However, colorism is not self-imposed, it's informed by centuries of racism and violence that forced individuals to align themselves with whiteness to survive. colorism has become a lingering byproduct of racism that continues to uphold white supremacy to this day, and it impacts people of all races and ethnicities.
whether consciously or unconsciously, those with colorist attitudes perceive people with lighter skin tone as more educated, attractive, prestigious and capable than those with darker skin tone.
As you move along the color spectrum, the darker you are, the less important, beautiful, viable or all of those things that society has imposed upon based on that notion of supremacy - Author & Psychologist Dr.DeGury
Having said all this, let us not shy away from discussing such issues no matter how uncomfortable they may be, it is due to stigma, prejudice and discrimination that the majority of dark toned people will rush to bleach their skin to try and fit in but forgetting/ not knowing that bleaching has more negative impact on one's health.
let us Embrace who we are there's nothing wrong with being dark toned.
