# Should Authors Use AI to Write Books?

AI technology is here to stay. In fact, it is already influencing almost every aspect of our lives and work. Avoiding it completely is becoming increasingly difficult unless one chooses to live as though the technological advancements of the last century never happened.

The question, therefore, is no longer whether authors should use AI to write books. The more important questions are: How should authors use AI? And what are the dangers of using it incorrectly in the writing process?

One of the greatest concerns about AI-generated writing is that it can dilute an author's unique voice. An authentic human voice is what distinguishes one writer from another. When many authors rely heavily on the same AI tools to generate content, their work can begin to sound similar because it is produced from the same underlying systems, patterns, and language structures.

However, there is a creative and balanced way to use AI. During our Professional Book Writing and Publishing Masterclass at ACN, we emphasized that AI should serve as a support tool rather than a replacement for the writer. Authors should create the content themselves and then use AI for feedback, editing suggestions, idea development, research assistance, or proofreading. The final revisions should always be made by the author and in the author's own voice.

Every author has a distinctive writing style. If your name were removed from your book, readers who are familiar with your previous work should still be able to recognize that it is your writing. That unique voice is part of your identity as an author. It reflects your experiences, personality, values, and worldview.

Technology can enhance the writing process, but it should never replace the author's creativity, originality, and voice. The best use of AI is not to write for the author, but to help the author write better.

The Dilemma of AI Generated Books - By Manson Mutumba (Member of ACN Publishers)

A reader walking past a book shop looks across the glass to a book shelf of the book shop, captivated by the title and the image of the cover of a book. The reader walks walks into the book store and to the shelf where the book is, the price tag says K250 ($14), this small amount was budgeted for by the reader, but they make a sacrifice to buy the book for the pleasures of reading on the topic and the genre of the book. The reader gets home, and within the immediate reading of the first 5 pages, they realize the entire book content is AI generated. The reader also realizes that the book cover has no disclosure by the author/publisher that the book is AI generated. Furious, the reader regrets sacrificing the K250 ($14) they had budgeted for to buy the book.

AI promised many people a very easy and quick process to having their books on book store shelves without investing in the time to imagine, research, creatively write and have a professional edit their manuscripts. AI content generating algorithms can't reach readers’ taste depths for well written text that stimulates their emotions, thoughts, their souls and their spirits. Over the past few years that many people have been turning to AI to publish their books, readers' experiences have been like the situation in the first paragraph.

This is the reason why publishing on Amazon requires people to declare if the manuscript or a portion of it is AI generated. Many authors with catalogues of books under their names that were AI generated and have no declarations on their book covers risk being viewed as frauds and any of their future publications being treated with contempt and suspicion.

Moreover, strong national policies demanding full disclosure of AI generated books are being implemented by various governments around the world, not just to protect readers from bad book experiences, but to also preserve the integrity of creative writing between human created works and those AI generated. For example, the EU AI Act on transparency rules for AI generated content comes into effect on August 2, 2026. Similarly, the State of California in the U.S is requiring large online platforms to be compliant to provenance and transparency policies on published content. Social Media platforms like Meta and TikTok, as well as content creation software like Adobe Stock are placing personalized requirements on AI generated content usage on these platforms.

In the short clip attached to this post, I emphasized the processes of human created content that AI content creation algorithms fail to encompass, thereby limiting the level of impact AI generated content has on the readers.
