HOW TO MAKE BROILER CHICKENS GROW BIG.
If you're looking to sell your chickens, then you know that buyers want big ones. But how big should they be to attract customers?
Well, it depends on your customers. There is no uniform standard for big and small chickens in the Zambian poultry market. Some customers consider 3.5kg chickens as big, while others consider anything less than 5kg as small.
Most buyers of live chickens are sensory based buyers. They gauge size by what their eyes see and what their hands feel. So, it's important that your birds are both big to the eyes and heavy to the hands.
From my personal experience, I categorize buyers into regular and premium customers. Regular customers buy chickens weighing between 3kg to 4.5kg. With the right care, these broilers should be between 6 weeks to 10 weeks of age. The premium customer, on the other hand, buys broilers weighing above 5kg and aged 12 weeks above.
No matter your target customers, it's important your birds add weight quickly. Here are a few tips to achieve the desired weight gain quickly:
1. Buy and use only high-quality feeds.
2. Feed your birds as much as they can eat.
3. Give your birds light in the night so that they can eat for a few more hours every day
4. Give vitamins in their water.
5. Keep their pen clean.
6. Give all necessary vaccines and medication.
7. As the birds begin to grow, sort them into different groups according to size.
I hope these tips help you meet your sales goals.
