At Number 6: Chipolopolo’s AFCON Comeback
Kicking off our countdown at number 6 is the Chipolopolo Boys’ remarkable return to the continental football stage as they qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), held in 2024 in Ivory Coast.
After missing the previous three editions, Zambia’s comeback was marked by an impressive qualification run, including a commanding 3-0 victory over hosts Ivory Coast in Ndola. This run reignited hopes and set the nation abuzz with excitement for the team’s performance at AFCON.
When the long-awaited day arrived, Zambia, placed in Group F, faced DR Congo in their opening match. Like many football-loving Zambians, we thought this game would be a walkover—especially after Kings Kangwa’s stunning goal in the 23rd minute. But, as we quickly learned, this was the AFCON, where every game is a battle. The match ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw, with Yoane “The Tormentor” Wissa (yes, I coined that nickname!) delivering a wake-up call for the Chipolopolo.
Next up was a clash with Tanzania—a game many were confident Zambia would win after their spirited performance in the opener. However, things took a turn early, with Taifa Stars’ fan favorite Simon Msuva scoring in the 11th minute. To make matters worse, Chipolopolo veteran Rodrick Kabwe (fondly known as "Cisse" by those who watched him play at Chifubu Grounds in Ndola) was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
The match was tough to watch, but just when hope seemed lost, Patson Daka reminded us why he plays in the English Premier League. His 88th-minute equalizer salvaged a 1-1 draw, but it was clear that victory at AFCON wouldn’t come easy.
Facing African heavyweights Morocco in the final group game, many fans—myself included—were simply hoping for a respectable result. And boy, did the Chipolopolo deliver! It was a thrilling encounter where Zambia matched Morocco stride for stride. Despite a valiant effort, the boys lost 1-0 to a goal by Hakim Ziyech. It was a defeat, but one that showed heart, grit, and determination.
17th January 2024 stands as a day of national pride, marking Zambia’s official return to the AFCON stage after a nine-year absence. While their campaign ended earlier than hoped, the team redeemed themselves by securing qualification for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. This time, the Chipolopolo Boys have promised a stronger and more determined approach.
