Grantee Highlight: Kukula Solar

Based in Chipata, Eastern Province of Zambia, Kukula Solar is a private social enterprise making a real impact in the horticulture sector. Through their innovative “rent-to-own” model, they empower smallholder farmers by providing access to modern, efficient irrigation solutions.

In 2023, the company received a United States African Development Foundation energy grant to further their mission of promoting off-grid energy, such as solar, for sustainable irrigation.

At RDI, we are incredibly proud of the work Kukula Solar is doing to drive community development in the Eastern province and beyond. Keep up the amazing work!

Grantee Highlight:

Chaangu Investments Ltd is a proud recipient of the United States African Development Foundation Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) grant. This initiative focuses on organic waste collection in Zambia while offering a reliable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective heating energy source.

The company manufactures environmentally friendly briquettes, commonly known as fire blocks, from agricultural and organic food waste. These briquettes serve as an excellent alternative to traditional charcoal and electricity, especially given the current electricity challenges in the country.

By transforming waste into valuable energy, they are committed to promoting effective waste management and contributing to a sustainable future for Zambia.

The Kalomo Dairy Cooperative Society Limited has successfully operationalized the K4.5 million grant that was given to it by the United States African Development Foundation for the expansion of its business enterprise.

The Cooperative has constructed two new solar powered bulk milk chilling plants in Bbelo and RR settlements in Chief Sipatunyana’s area to expand its milk collection business.

The development has seen an increase of milk bulking capacity to 2,500 litres from the two plants giving an opportunity to more farmers in the area to sell their milk to the cooperative and realise the much needed income at household level.

USADF through its technical partner, the Rural Development Innovations (RDI) Limited handed over the two facilities to the Kalomo Dairy Cooperative Society Limited.

RDI Zambia carried out a Farmer's Practices Survey in Chipata and Kasenengwa districts. These surveys are essential for understanding and improving the socio-economic conditions of farmers in our communities.

The insights gathered help measure the impact of United States African Development Foundation projects in these areas.
