AMENDMENT OF NAPSA ACT

I beg to differ with the Former Director General of the NAPSA Dr. Aubrey Chibumba's sentiments that amending the National Pension Scheme Act number 40 of 1996 to provide members of the Scheme an option to access part of the contributions before retirement is not a right approach to preparing someone for retirement.

Dr. Chibumba's argument is that by allowing partial withdrawals, the government will be trying to solve a wrong problem as it is not guaranteed beneficiaries will use the money for the intended purposes such as building of houses to guarantee home ownership after retirement.

We now live in a time where we have more employees and individuals becoming entrepreneurs at an early age before turning 40. My understanding is that if you are on a salary, your salary should just cuison your expenditure but your business should provide extra to develop yourself and create wealth.

This means that, If you do drawdown on your NAPSA, you have an opportunity to invest in your business and take risks while you can manage the risk considering its just part of your pension and you still have room to pick yourself up in case of loss.
Imagine starting a business at 60 years with all your pension

With the rise in the Noncommucable diseases, alot of people are dying before they reach 60 so partial drawdown would help them also enjoy some of their benefits before they die.

However, there will be need for deliberate sensitization of how to utilise the funds once accessed .They will be need for Investment advisors to be engaged to aid the use of the funds.

It is a welcome move 👍
