If your product falls under a mandatory standard we guide on how you go about registrations and complying to regulation.

If your product falls under voluntary standards, we guide also.
Please take note that, the local council through their public health department, are mandated to regulate all things to do with trading of food.

So here is a guide.

PLEASE NOTE THAT PRODUCTS SELECTED BELOW, ARE JUST EXAMPLES, IT CAN BE ANY OTHER FOOD.

1. If product falls under mandatory standard For example PEANUT BUTTER
This is regulated by a mandatory standard.

ZS 723- Peanut Butter

All mandatory standards are regulated by Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency
So after you establish everything and you are ready to start producing and supplying, visit ZCSA.

*They will give you a permit to supply.*

On the procedure... they will advise.

But it will involve them inspecting your product, taking your product for testing and them inspecting your place were you are packaging the food from.

And remember.

As you do all this.... use standards. Itโ€™s very important.

Some issues to look at:
a) Product packaging.
b) Product labels
c) Hygiene (Place of work and people)
We will talk about this in detail.

2. If product DOES NOT fall under mandatory standard for example HONEY

Honey is natural food which is not under any mandatory standard.
So what you do is you go to the Council. Public Health Department.

*They will issue you with a health permit.*

Procedure is almost the same as ZCSA.

Your product and premises will be inspected so make sure everything is in order.

Council charges depend on your location.

While preparing to go to Vietnam in the early '70s, I received some of my best business trainingโ€ฆ

In war, management of fear is constantly the issue. In actual combat, I noticed that fear created cowards out of some, and heroes out of others. Fear made some Marines smarter, while others became fools.

The same is true in business.

Whenever I realize I did something stupid in business, it is either because I was too fearful, or not fearful enough. I was either acting too much like Pee-wee Herman or too much like Rambo.
One of the reasons many entrepreneurs stay small is because they act more like Pee-wee Herman. Looking back on my own career as an entrepreneur, I know I would have been far more successful if I were more like Rambo--if I had dreamed bigger dreams, taken on more impossible tasks and had a bigger vision of the possibilities.

Too much of the time, I played it too safe.

As a Marine, I learned that fear, when it takes the form of self-doubt, kills more men than the enemy. The same is true in business - especially in entrepreneurship.

Time to face our fears,

Are you cheaper? Try to be competitive with your pricing, ensure your production costs are low so that your pricing is competitive.
If you are cheaper but with valuable products or services, you will have those customers coming to you.
