In December, we discuss The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli.

The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning politics and ethics. The Prince has the general theme of accepting that the aims of princes—such as glory and survival—can justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends. Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of Machiavelli's works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative.

In November, we discuss Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge.

In February 2014, Reni Eddo-Lodge posted an impassioned argument on her blog about her deep-seated frustration with the way discussions of race and racism in Britain were constantly being shut down by those who weren't affected by it. She gave the post the title 'Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race'. Her sharp, fiercely intelligent words hit a nerve, and the post went viral, spawning a huge number of comments from people desperate to speak up about their own similar experiences.

Galvanised by this response, Eddo-Lodge decided to dive into the source of these feelings, this clear hunger for an open discussion. The result is a searing, illuminating, absolutely necessary exploration of what it is to be a person of colour in Britain today, covering issues from eradicated black history to white privilege, the fallacy of 'meritocracy' to whitewashing feminism, and the inextricable link between class and race. Full of passionate, personal and keenly felt argument, Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race is a wake-up call to a nation in denial about the structural and institutional racism occurring in our homes.

In October, we discuss Into Exile and Back by Simon Zukas.

Simon Zukas is one of a handful of white settlers who played a significant role in both anti-colonial and postcolonial politics in East and Central Africa. His autobiography provides an account of his Lithuanian and Jewish childhood, his family's flight from the pending holocaust in Europe, his remarkable struggle to adapt to a new society and involvement in Marxist and radical politics in Cape Town. It details his experiences in a Livingstone gaol, and deportation to London where he provided a haven for anti-colonial activists. He describes his role in the post-colonial society, his ambivalence about the popular but anti- democratic one party state, implemented by Kaunda, and his role in opposition politics and stints as a government minister in the post-Kaunda era..

In September, we discuss Thanks for the Feedback by Douglas Stone & Sheila Heen

We swim in an ocean of feedback. Bosses, colleagues, customers—but also family, friends, and in-laws—they all have “suggestions” for our performance, parenting, or appearance. We know that feedback is essential for healthy relationships and professional development—but we dread it and often dismiss it.

That’s because receiving feedback sits at the junction of two conflicting human desires. We do want to learn and grow. And we also want to be accepted just as we are right now. Thanks for the Feedback is the first book to address this tension head on. It explains why getting feedback is so crucial yet so challenging, and offers a powerful framework to help us take on life’s blizzard of off-hand comments, annual evaluations, and unsolicited advice with curiosity and grace.
