Zambia Champions Midwifery and Maternal Health at WHA79
=================================

At the ongoing 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Zambia continues to make its voice heard on the global stage through strong advocacy for maternal and newborn health and the urgent need to invest in midwifery services.

The Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services at the Ministry of Health Zambia, Ms. Daphen Shamambo, delivered a powerful Call to Action to high-level government delegates and global health leaders, emphasizing the urgent global need for “One Million More Midwives.”

Her presentation followed a high-level side event on Midwifery Models of Care, which Zambia proudly co-sponsored and hosted together with the International Confederation of Midwives during the Assembly. The session, moderated on 18th May 2026, brought together global experts, policymakers, and health partners to discuss sustainable investments in midwifery and quality maternal healthcare systems.

In her address, Ms. Shamambo highlighted the critical role midwives play in reducing maternal and newborn deaths, strengthening primary healthcare systems, and advancing universal health coverage. She stressed that investing in midwives is not only a health priority but also a social and economic investment that saves lives and transforms communities.

She further called on governments and cooperating partners to increase investment in the training, recruitment, deployment, and retention of midwives in order to address the growing shortage of skilled health personnel globally and in Africa.

Zambia’s participation and visible representation at the 79th World Health Assembly demonstrates the country’s continued commitment to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes and contributing to global conversations shaping the future of healthcare.

The strong presence of Zambian midwives in Geneva has also showcased the country’s leadership and dedication towards strengthening midwifery services and advocating for women, newborns, and families everywhere.

“Midwives are essential frontline health workers whose contribution remains key to achieving safer pregnancies, safer deliveries, and healthier communities,” Ms. Shamambo emphasized during her presentation.

As the world continues to confront maternal and newborn health challenges, Zambia’s voice at the global platform serves as a reminder that strengthening midwifery is one of the most effective and life-saving investments nations can make.
