GOVERNMENT has completed the aerial geophysical smart mapping survey of Zone A, comprising largely North Western, Western and parts of Copperbelt provinces.

The first-ever country-wide survey will advance Zambia’s mineral exploration efforts and help the country achieve President Hakainde Hichilema’s target of producing three million tons of copper annually by 2031.

Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Hapenga Kabeta said in an interview that Government has divided the country into four zones and that Zone A has effectively been flown over.

“Next up starting this month is Zone B encompassing parts of the Copperbelt, Luapula and Central provinces. Zone C covers Northern, parts of Luapula, Muchinga and parts of Central and Lusaka provinces. Zone D covers parts of Muchinga and Eastern provinces,” he said.

Dr Kabeta said Government will next year be dealing with the remaining zones, which will be concluded before it ends.

He said Government is championing safe legal mining activities and formal trade of minerals in a secured environment to reduce the levels of illegality in the mining sector.

BANK of Zambia (BoZ) Governor Denny Kalyalya says the central bank is not buying gold being extracted from “gold rush" districts country-wide because of ethical issues such as child and or militia labour.

And BoZ has about 2.8 tonnes of gold in its reserves worth US$300 million.

Dr Kalyalya said during a media tour and briefing at Zambia International Trade Fair (ZITF) here on Sunday that the process of buying gold using the local currency has continued.

However, Dr Kalyalya highlighted that BoZ is not participating in buying gold from gold rush districts country wide for varying reasons.

Dr Kalyalya said to start with, gold coming from the said districts is unprocessed.

He said BoZ can only buy gold from places where the mineral is properly mined, processed and with no issues of child or slave labour.

Zambia Gold Mining buying Gold at K2,600 per gram

By Tamara Muswala

Zambia Gold Company a company owned by ZCCM IH has aggregated about seven kilogram of gold from artisanal mining in the last few months from its Rufunsa and Mumbwa gold selling centers.

ZCCM IH Public Relations Manager LOISA Mbatha says Zambia Gold Company is offering competitive prices of between 2,400 Kwacha and 2,600 Kwacha per gram.

Ms. Mbatha has told ZNBC News at the ongoing CAMINEX in Kitwe that current prices of gold are trading at about 2,800 Kwacha per gram.

She said Zambia Gold Company is offering a ready market for the local artisanal mining so that it can consolidate and aggregate what is being mined by artisanal gold miners.

Ms. Mbatha said Zambia Gold Company wants to mop up all the gold that is being mined by artisanal miners so that it does not find itself across the borders.
