RENEWABLE ENERGY AND CONSERVATION - THE RELATIONSHIP

Development of renewable energy projects, such as solar and wind power, can significantly contribute to the conservation of forests and wildlife in several ways:

1. Reduced reliance on fossil fuels: Renewable energy reduces the need for coal, oil, and gas, which often involve deforestation and habitat destruction for extraction and infrastructure development.

2. Minimized land degradation: Unlike fossil fuel extraction, renewable energy projects generally require less land and cause less land degradation, preserving ecosystems and habitats.

3. Lower greenhouse gas emissions: By reducing carbon emissions, renewable energy helps mitigate climate change impacts on forests and wildlife, such as altered ecosystems and disrupted species habitats.

4. Protection of biodiversity hotspots: Solar and wind farms can be designed to avoid sensitive ecosystems, allowing for coexistence with local wildlife.

However, it's crucial to conduct thorough environmental impact assessments to ensure projects don't harm local ecosystems. For example, wind farms can pose risks to birds and bats if not properly sited.

In Zambia, renewable energy can support conservation efforts like protecting the National Forests' and National Parks' ecosystems. 🌳

Perhaps it's time we begin placing much emphasis on teaching and learning about ways to derive economic benefits from our forests without degrading them, because clearly their values we understand.

Before the Earth falls silent...

Scientists say we’re in the midst of the next great extinction, humanity is taking a chainsaw to the tree of life. But an ambitious new plan to protect 50% of our planet would heal our home, and governments are meeting soon to discuss the crisis. They will only deliver if they hear a giant chorus behind this plan. Add your name -- before our Earth falls silent:

SIGN THE PETITION

Dear friends,

By 2020, two-thirds of wild animals will be gone. Life is being extinguished as fast as when the dinosaurs disappeared -- and it’s happening because humanity is taking a chainsaw to the tree of life.

Unless we stop this tragedy, the Earth’s delicate biodiversity could completely collapse, leaving our planet deathly silent and uninhabitable for humans. But there’s hope - top scientists are backing an ambitious plan to put half our planet under protection and restore harmony with our home.

Governments are meeting soon to discuss how we address the crisis. If we bring a resounding chorus of human voices behind the 50% plan, we can push governments to stop the next mass extinction.

Join the global chorus, before the Earth falls silent

We’re testing the boundaries of our planet’s ability to sustain us and all life, but the biodiversity crisis still isn’t high on the political agenda! If enough of us engage now, we could change that.

Scientists say our best chance to save our ecosystems and 80-90% of all species is giving them enough safe space to thrive, then nature uses its wisdom to regenerate. The 50% plan sounds ambitious, but in fact it’s totally viable, and likely the best way to sustain our intricate web of life.

But to get this off the ground we have to show our governments now that people overwhelmingly want to protect 50% from deforestation, dirty energy, and industrial fishing and agriculture. Let’s start today with a massive petition for 50%, and keep building the pressure until we win!

Join the global chorus, before the Earth falls silent

It is a great unwisdom of our species that we have become so disconnected from our natural world. But it's not too late. We have the capacity to grow wiser. Our hope for change built this massive movement, and we won the Paris climate deal. We are within sight of protecting 50% of our planet. Let's come together, lead, and restore the harmony between humans and our home.

No mining NOW or EVER in the Lower Zambezi National Park

We the people of Zambia want to put a stop to the mining operations which want to take place in the Lower Zambezi National Park. Lower Zambezi is a natural ecosystem, a delicate balance of wildlife and indigenous trees and plants. Under no circumstances can this be disturbed with mining activities, not to mention the devastation the toxic residue of such activities will bring to the soil and the rivers. This is not economic empowerment but the strong arm of corruption and greed at work. The solution is simple, take away all licences, permits and bring those who approved such atrocities to justice. We the Zambian people want to know why this is being allowed by our Judiciary when they know full well that it is clearly an environmental tragedy and a step closer to the extinction of our wildlife and indigenous vegetation. Our forests have been cut down of precious timber, our rivers have been polluted with toxic waste from the mining and agricultural sector, our soils have been degraded with chemical fertilizers and our natural resources have been pillaged and are nearly at the point of depletion...now climate change is making our situation worse through the ignorance and greed of those who do not understand it. For too long we have been quite, for too long we have been bullied into submission, now we say no more! Zambia is not for sale, never has been and never will be...We IMPI have declared that we will not be silent until the strong arm of greed and kick backs has been completely vanquished and the proposal of mining for copper in our precious Lower Zambezi stopped.
