Do you reflect often on the definition of the word ‘opportunity?

I love the definition by business dictionary; An Opportunity is an exploitable set of circumstances with uncertain outcome, requiring commitment of resources and involving`. (www.businessdictionary.com)

Exploitable set of circumstances…
This means that such circumstances can be positive ones or indeed negative ones. Therefore, a trip to another country, or company or to an individual can be an opportunity; having additional insight, information about a particular issue can be an opportunity.

Equally death can be an opportunity, being fired at work, being disappointed or dumped in a relationship, or locked outside, or left behind etc can constitute opportunities.

So… DO NOT let opportunities pass you by

A thought and a set of questions? Is the feud between the two biggest political parties in Zambia likely to end soon? Does the question of conflict anymore lie in logic and common sense or in aiming at winning the argument whatever the case or facts and truths? Are we likely to see a humble soul or heart among the key players who may see magnanimity in 'dying a little' for the sake of the nation? Or, does the answer lie only in someone else or in another political party completely distinct and detached from PF and UPND structures and values to emerge with a different political order and set of values? Thinking......

The case of Zambian leadership today and l mean political, church and individual leadership compares pretty well to that ascribed to Animal Farm, an old book written by George Orwel. It is. a case when reason, emperical discourses and authentic facts and even truths are ignored, discarded, manipulated and never considered in order to save and serve relations, pride, ethinic inclination and petty personal preferences. The question now most commonly asked is not what was said but who said it. Zambia has become more tribal than before (foolish to deny that we are tribal), highly polarised and divided, intolerant and amazingly irrational. The church equally is a sorry voice and full of satanic vernon and political intoxication.
Leadership seeks an extraordinary heart, resilience, cloud peak reasoning and supreme action. Leadership is not about knock outs and awards but it is about seeking a common win or good.
Look closely at the leadership in the opposition and the ruling party what would you be proud about? The CSOs leadership too cannot demonstrate the difference.

We need leadership that is courageous, that is not proud and arrogant, leadership that is servant serving, leadership that focusses outward more than inwards, embracive and reasoning. Leadership that does not only seek to fulfil personal goes but common goals. We need serious leadership discussions in Zambia.

Often times when we embark on the journey of righteousness, justice and fairness, we are entangled, jailed, caged and enslaved by the biases within ourselves. Biases even when confronted by objectivity and truth we fail to shade off. That is a sign that we need to begin another journey of growth, objectivity, truthfulness and impartial appreciation and acknowledgement. What journeys do you evaluate you should embrace...? Free your mind, heart and soul.

"And so,when you are surrounded with darkness, do not shake your fist and raise your voice and curse the darkness. Rather be a Light unto the darkness, and don't be mad about it. Then you will know Who You Really Are, and all others will know, too. Let your Light shine so that everyone will know how special you are!" Neale Donald Walsch

Have you often wondered how many times we let great moments, significant changes, merry and heart warming things pass us by? Bundles and bunches of joy and happiness slip through our hearts' and smiles' grips simply because we do not see them or may regard them insignificant, unbecoming, not for the educated or for my class. Remember every moment you felt like giggling, smiling or laugh out loud but restrained yourself because you thought it was not cool - you problem missed a great moment. Have you taken stock of how warm your heart becomes whenever you help someone, made the child laugh, the time you did something to someone and they looked at you and said 'thank you' or when you gave up a seat to a lady or elderly person or gave a turn to someone to go first?.... Those are precious moments that help to heal you more than the person you render the service to. But quite often we do not take up the opportunity to do such favours to our hearts through helping others. Your heart, your face and your whole being becomes happier, healthier and younger whenever you render a service. take notice next and give yourself a dose of ahaaa moment.

What makes us different is not copying exactly what others are doing, rather it is by learning from them, what makes us unique is not embracing and 'wearing' the character or behaviour of our idols, but by picking lessons from them and using that which we admire to create something of greater value something of our own; this is known as learning and creativity. Don't be shy from learning and utilising best practises of success and impact, be thankful that they came into your space. Use them to 'water and fertilise' your greatness.

We often admire those that have a great ability to reflect on issues and speak their mind or heart out. Equally we should consider in high esteem those that reflect on issues, are curious, but have the great ability not to always speak out. Many times the miracle of greatness is in the gentle breeze that in thunder.

With all the xenophobia activities playing in South Africa - what is or what was your first reaction? Has your reaction changed over the past few days of reporting on the xenophobia? What was informing your reactions? Prejudice, assumptions, values, the past? I keep wondering too - one thing I am sure of is that I am beyond curious - I feel anger, ashamed, embarrassed and disappointed.
It would be interesting to interrogate one of the perpetuators of the shameful act. Honestly I have little energy right now to reflect on it.

Talent Africa is this week working with CSOs working on Extractive Industries (EI). There is great energy to take actions targeted at extractive justice for both extractive companies and the citizens especially those within extractive areas. However there is weak capacity on part of CSOs on how the extractive chain can be implemented, trade gymnastics, tax policies and trading of extractives. This is not only unique to Zambia but to most developing countries. We need to take interest to provide capacity and seek capacity to allow greater participation and involvement of all parties including those that experience the impact of extractives.
