It was disheartening and sad to learn of a woman who was reported missing while hiking the Appalachian Trail, and found dead two years after she was reported missing. The New York Times reported that she had attempted to send multiple text messages to her husband to explain her situation and ask him to call for help. Sadly, the messages did not go through. Most often GPS tracking systems are used to track down stolen vehicles. The majority of tracking devices communicate solely over cellular networks. In urban centers where cellular services are more widely available cellular-only services are sufficient. Outside of urban area, “dark-spots” occur where there is no coverage by cellular carriers, tracking devices perform poorly.
