Tellurides are minerals that contain the element tellurium (Te). Some of them are among the world's most important gold and silver ores because gold can be chemically bound within these minerals.
Major Gold-Bearing Telluride Minerals
1. Calaverite
• Formula: AuTe₂
• One of the richest gold minerals.
• Typically has a yellowish to silvery-white color.
2. Sylvanite
• Contains gold, silver, and tellurium.
• Metallic silver to gray in color.
3. Krennerite
• A rare mineral containing gold and tellurium.
• Commonly associated with gold-bearing quartz veins.
4. Petzite
• Contains gold and silver.
• Metallic gray in color.

How Can a Prospector Recognize Rocks That May Contain Tellurides?
Tellurides are commonly found in:
• Quartz veins associated with gold mineralization.
• Fractured rocks affected by hot hydrothermal fluids.
• Mineralized zones containing pyrite and chalcopyrite.
• Rocks with metallic gray or bright silvery appearances.
Important: The presence of tellurides or telluride-hosted gold cannot be confirmed by visual inspection alone. Many telluride minerals resemble other minerals. Proper identification requires mineralogical or chemical analysis.
